Powell tells B.C. crowd he might vote for Obama
IAN BAILEY

June 13, 2008

VANCOUVER -- Colin Powell, the former Republican secretary of state, says he is not ruling out a vote for Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee for president.

While Mr. Powell served in the administrations of two Republican presidents, he suggested yesterday his support for presumed Republican nominee John McCain is not a forgone conclusion.

He noted that although both he and Mr. Obama are black, he would not cast a vote for the Illinois senator on the basis of race. "I will vote for the individual I think that brings the best set of tools to the problems of 21st-century America and the 21st-century world regardless of party, regardless of anything else other than the most qualified candidate," Mr. Powell said at a news conference before delivering a speech to about 800 people attending a leadership forum at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

"Both of them certainly have the qualifications to be the president of the United States, but both of them cannot be," he said.

Mr. Powell has been supportive of Mr. Obama's successes, but was commenting after the senator recently clinched the Democratic nomination.

A 35-year veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Powell also noted he would not necessarily support Mr. McCain because of his extensive military service.

Asked whether he thought it was a difficult choice, he said: "I think so. Yes."

Too bad Powell already sold his soul.  He might have been a credible source.

He's stilll credible to Bush backers, as he essentialyl made the case for war believable with his credibility.

Beachy was saying this week he'd love to see powell run for prez, or selected as VP.  I wonder if suddenly he'll say "I thought all along that powell had poor judgment"...

I saw it on MSNBC and came here to post a thread called "Do you trust Colin Powell's Judgment"?

I wanted to see how many of the 'taints believed 100% in Powell's ability to make the right choice :)

Great post Benny ;D

Some will just discount it, like they do with anything coming from a black person to Obama. Article lead of with that pattern. Strange these same types don't discount all McCains white backers saying it's because they are white, or Clintons. God, people are people already. Just my offensive strike againest that thought ;)

Powell is a lifelong repub, the fact he is not just endorsing McCain speaks huge volumes. And to think his name was bandied about as VP haha, you know Mccain tried to get him on board, with feverish effort ;D

Colin Powell has ALWAYS stood up for what's best in the interest of the people in the U.S.  That's why both major political parties were recruiting him so heavily.  Too bad we don't have more politicians and potential politicians of the same mold as Colin powel.

Sold his soul... ::) ::) ::)

Powell has made up his mind; he is obviously voting for Obama.  All this talk of

"I will vote for the individual I think that brings the best set of tools to the problems of 21st-century America and the 21st-century world regardless of party, regardless of anything else other than the most qualified candidate,"

is transparent code for I'm voting for the young guy.  If you are voting for McCain you don't talk like that because he so obviously represents the past.  You don't talk about the 21st century in order to draw an association with John McCain.  McCain is going to feel the sting of ageism in this race not so much because he is old but because he looks old.  The Gipper did not look old; McCain does.  :-[

Powell lied to the UN and the world with his WMD/Al Qaeda presentation prior to the war.

He helped clinch the crime of the century.

Yeah we need more team players like Powell in leadership positions.

Please.  I'm eating lunch.

Securing control of Iraqi oil IS in the best interest of the US people.  You are correct, Powell sold a lie because he can't just "say" it's about the oil.

You keep making this assertion that multinational control of the Iraqi oil PSAs is in the best interest of the country.

Exactly how?

The U.S. gets less oil today from Iraq than before 9/11;
The largest source of crude oil for the United States is the United States;
Iraq has never represented more than 4.5% of crude oil used in the United States;
The United States' dependence on foreign oil has increased, but the amount of oil from the Persian Gulf has decreased

It boils down to this:

Hilary, Obama and McCain Are all in a boat and it sinks in a storm.

Who survives?

Yes sir.  Colin Powell is a great American.

He's doing what I did earlier in the campaign:  assess the candidates and decide which one is best suited to lead the country.  I considered Obama too.  When I determined he is a quasi-socialist, he was crossed off my list.  I suspect Powell will do the same.

Keep in mind he didn't call himself a Republican until very late in his life.

Same here.  I was very impressed with Obama when I first heard him at the DNC.  I was kinda hoping, at that time, he'd be a moderate democrat cause I figured he was a rising star in the party.  Its his strong socialistic agenda that bothers me greatly.

I respect Powell's opinion.  I bet there was extreme pressure on him to stay loyal to the administration in 2001-2002...I'm not excusing him, I just think that many in his position would have acted similarly.

Powell knows the game and the issues ten times better than any of us ever will.

For him to not have ruled him out already means he's voting for him.  For him to not automatically endorse the repub candidate, means he's not voting mccain.

All this "once powell realizes..." crap is dreaming.  Powell knows obama's positions and he sure knows mccains positions.
