Then why wasn't the mantle of the "Steroid Guru", Dan Duchaine, lined up with bodybuilding trophies? Where were all his national titles and Mr Universe medals?

Because he ate 1800 calories a day, and you should know this if you knew
Dan Duchaine at ALL!
Most are all show no go!

it's funny how people think you either need STEROIDS or SUPPS to build muscles...

pretty sad...

what about you just lift weights and eat a bit more proteins than the average joe? It does also build muscles, but not HUGE BIG MONSTER MUSCLES ...

That was/is my point. I don't think bantamweights eat that little. Duchaine needed more calories and protein (solid and/or liquid) to build more size. But, he didn't, thinking the needle would solve his woes.

I think that had more to do with his lack of personal bodybuilding success (despite being the "Steroid Guru") than his allegedly bad genetics.

Some people need to eat more than just "a bit more" protein to put on significant size. And, if their lifestyle (work schedule, family situation, etc) doesn't allow for them to eat a bunch of solid meals, then implementing protein/weight-gainer/MRP shake is an excellent option.

If you can get the job done with just regular food, more power to you. But, if you can't, break out the shaker and/or the blender and go to work. The bottom line is: Eat (and if necessary, drink) the quantity and quality of calories you need to grow.

I classify plain protein powder as a "food" not a "supplement".  It's a convenience form of food that can be used in place of beef, eggs, fish at times and places where it is inconvenient to prepare and eat those foods.  But you don't NEED protein powder to build muscle if you can eat enough real food, and you shouldn't rely on it or overdo it in any event.

That said, protein powder makes up a relatively small part of the world we call "supplements", and 95% of what is being sold by supp companies is useless crap.

The extreme muscularity of pro bodybuilders is the result of massive anabolic drug use, but it does not follow that everyone who uses massive amounts of anabolic drugs will develop a Mr.Olympia physique. One thing does not necessarily lead to the other. Understand the difference.

Point taken. But, his physique was nowhere near national (or even state-level) caliber. That question was for the folks who cry "All Drugs", when it comes to certain folks' physiques.

I'd suggest that this lackluster training and the reportedly pitiful consumption of 1800 calories per day had more to do with Duchaine's lack of success as a competitive bodybuilder than his allegedly bad genetics.

By the way, isn't/wasn't Duchaine credited with helping to introduce whey protein and ephedrine/ma huang to bodybuilding?

Fair enough. I classify protein drinks (MRPs, weight gainers, protein powders) as supplements, because they provide super-contentrated forms of nutrients that, in some cases, are difficult to get in certain volume from regular food.

That said, protein powder makes up a relatively small part of the world we call "supplements", and 95% of what is being sold by supp companies is useless crap.

I wouldn't go as far as deeming 95% of supplements as useless. It's one of those cases of "Them that's got shall get; Them that's not shall lose". If your diet is terrible, all the NO-XPLODE, CELL-TECH, Methyl 1-D, etc. in the world won't put any sinew on your frame.

However, with your nutritional regime on point, supplements like these can help give you a boost or a kick-start to obtain that extra size and strength. The key to remember, as you may well agree, is that supplements are just that.....SUPPLEMENTS.

BTW, steroids without protein and carbs don't work, right?
I mean you have to eat tons of protein (e.g. from supplements) to be ALL DRUGS!
So it's rather steroids AND supps VS. steroids AND real food.
