WASHINGTON - With gasoline topping $4 a gallon, President Bush urged Congress on Wednesday to lift its long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, saying the United States needs to increase its energy production. Democrats quickly rejected the idea.


"There is no excuse for delay," the president said in a statement in the Rose Garden. With the presidential election just months away, Bush made a pointed attack on Democrats, accusing them of obstructing his energy proposals and blaming them for high gasoline costs. His proposal echoed a call by Republican presidential candidate John McCain to open the Continental Shelf for exploration

"Families across the country are looking to Washington for a response," Bush said.

Congressional Democrats were quick to reject the push for lifting the drilling moratorium, saying oil companies already have 68 million acres offshore waters under lease that are not being developed.

Oil was at $ 70.00 in Jan of 2006      Now it is at $ 140

When gas is at 2.14 a gallon and George Bush put in his plan for energy security in 2005. Things looked good.

In 2007 congress rewrote it and gas prices have doubled.

George Bush has been for drilling in Anwar for along time, he was also one of the first presidents to preach about energy independance.

Congress though was more concerned with oil sheiks.

The truly ironic part is that most oil development in Canada is performed by American companies with American head offices.The Saudi are nationalized with no money going back to the US.

Pelosi et al. revised the energy program to make Canadian oil sands an alternative fuel and now they will ban its use through government.

By the way this applies to Venezuela oil from the Orinco belt and domestic ethanol and even local development of oil shale will be stopped.

The congress has virtually assured that most oil imports will now come from the middle east. You can blame GWB and his policies all you want, but at least he had the sense to try to stop Americans from being committed to middle eastern oil and strive for independence from crackpots. Also, Canada under NAFTA is required to export all of our to the US and in most cases it is at a discount because America has many heavy oil refineries, that we don't have. If the dems open up NAFTA you can bet the oil will be the first thing Canada will negotiate out.

There are 68 million acres alloted for off shore drilling.  Arnold said it's a stupid idea to drill off cali.  Drilling isn't going to change anything for a number of years AND the repubs had control of the both houses and the presidency for 6 years.  The Dems barely a year and a half.  If the repubs wanted off shore drilling they could have made it happen.  If BUSH wants off shore drilling HE can reverse the executive order.

This whole issue of drilling is nothing but political nipple milk.   

And further more.  I like a republican control congress.  I don't like the current republican neocon president.

I have to disagree with you that things looked good b/c of Cheney's energy policy.  The Bush Administration, from day one, knew that worldwide demand was increasing rapidly and, due in part to profit driven measures taken by Big Oil, the supply was not expanding.  I mean they knew that China would overtake Japan as the #2 consumer and they knew that all of Asia would be consuming 1/4 of all oil produced by 2020.  Couple that with the declining reserves and you have a recipe for exploding prices. 

What was their reaction?  Maintain heavy reliance on fossil fuels.  That's our energy policy under Bush/Cheney.

Maintain reliance on foreign oil.  Not a word about conservation, alternative fuels or R&D for either of those ventures.

Outside of throwing gas on the price fire, I don't see a damn good thing coming out of 'business as usual' Bush/Cheney energy policies.
