Bodybuilding supplements can cause seizures, Health Canada says

Last Updated: Thursday, June 19, 2008 | 2:54 PM ET
The Canadian Press
Health Canada is warning consumers not to use bodybuilder dietary supplements called 6-OXO and 1-AD because they can trigger seizures and blood clots in the brain that can lead to lasting disability.

The department is also warning people not to use other supplements containing the ingredients found in 6-OXO and 1-AD, chemicals known as 4-androstene-3,6,17-trione and 1-androstenediol.

Both 6-OXO and 1-AD are manufactured by ErgoPharm-Proviant Technologies in Champaign, Ill., and are promoted for bodybuilding.

Health Canada says it has received one report of a serious adverse event linked to use of the supplements in this country.

A man who had no known medical conditions developed seizures and blood clots in his brain after using the supplements, which he had bought in the United States.

The product 6-OXO is an unauthorized natural health product in Canada, while 1-AD contains an anabolic steroid that is regulated as a controlled substance in Canada.

That means it can only be dispensed by prescription and used under the supervision of a health professional.

Neither is authorized for sale in Canada, but Canadians can buy them over the internet or while travelling abroad.

Anyone using either supplement, or others containing the same ingredients, should stop taking the products immediately and consult with a health-care professional if they have concerns, Health Canada says, adding it is taking action to block further importation of the products.

Man, way back when, I used to love using 1-AD. That shit was probably the best "supplement" I ever tried. 6-OXO I can't really comment much on, but, for the most part, no seizures here back then..

He was probably popping ECA, prozac, sudafed, viagra, and everything else under the sun too, and decided to sue the company with the deepest pockets. He drove to america to get it, so his hands are a tad dirty. I'm sure his lawyer is salivating, though.

One report! How the hell did they link it to these products specifically based on ONE incident?

I don't think 1-AD has been on the market for a long time either.

Androstenediol was discovered in the 1940s and a metabolic study was published in 1972. Aside from these studies, 1-AD received little attention until recently

In the 1990s, governments worldwide tried to abolish people’s access to anabolic steroids by instituting oppressive style laws, thereby creating not only a successful black market, but also a strong reason to find alternative muscle building enhancers.

This led to the rediscovery of 1-Androstenediol and 1-Testosterone by chemist Patrick Arnold. Which is a good thing because the compounds used in 1 AD and 1Test were not covered by existing anti-steroid laws in some countries.

The OTC hormones aren't totally innocuous. The sale of methylated hormones to kids borders on the criminal, I agree.

But still, this is only one case. Anything could happen to any one person taking anything.

You might wanna rethink that statement of yours.

You think the bodybuilding supplement company has "deeper pockets" than the legit major pharmaceutical corporations that manufacture Viagra, Prozac, and the others you mentioned? ::) ::)
