Not many people know what the actual 'stock market' is, nor actually buy or sell stocks. So it is actually a good question. And once you get into stocks, bonds, futures, mutual funds, short and long, T-Bills, and tax free funds, it gets really complicated. Plus how much percentage it costs you to buy or sell the stocks, and how much percentage it costs to maintain a mutual fund yearly.
From one definition "A market is a public place where things are bought and sold. The term "stock market" refers to the business of buying and selling stock", but in this age, most of it is electronic anyway.
It is not easy. You can get very lucky, or lose. I have done both. Nowadays, I dwell in Mutual Funds.
