Obama tried to slam McCain for not vting for equal pay for women (it would increase lawsuits) yet he does not support the measure in real life.

Another hypocrite.

Obama's for Equal Pay, Yet Pays Female Staffers Less Than Males

While Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has vowed to make pay equity for women a top priority if elected president, an analysis of his Senate staff shows that women are outnumbered and out-paid by men.

That is in contrast to Republican presidential candidate John McCain's Senate office, where women, for the most part, out-rank and are paid more than men.

Obama spoke in Albuquerque, N.M. last week about his commitment to the issue and his support of a Senate bill to make it easier to sue an employer for pay discrimination.

"Mr. McCain is an honorable man, we respect his service. But when you look at our records and our plans on issues that matter to working women, the choice could not be clearer," Obama told the audience in New Mexico, a voter-swing state. "It starts with equal pay. Sixty-two percent of working women in America earn half or more than of their family's income. But women still earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2008. You'd think that Washington would be united it its determination to fight for equal pay."

He continued, saying that he is proud to have supported the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which would extend the limit on how long an employee can wait before suing an employer for pay discrimination.

The legislation was named after Lilly Ledbetter, who was a supervisor at Goodyear Tire & Rubber's plant in Gadsden, Ala. She sued for pay discrimination before retiring after 19 years because she had made $6,500 less per year than the lowest paid male supervisor.

However, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out her case, saying she waited too long to file a complaint. The court said that under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, an employee must sue within 180 days of a decision regarding pay if alleged discrimination is involved. The bill sought to change the law, but Democrats could not muster the needed 60 votes to override a Republican filibuster.

Obama voted for the equal pay litigation bill in April. McCain was campaigning that day and did not vote. But he has expressed opposition to the legislation, fearing it would open the door to too much litigation.

On average, women working in Obama's Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That's according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama's Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one -- Obama's administrative manager -- was a woman.

The average pay for the 33 men on Obama's staff (who earned more than $23,000, the lowest annual salary paid for non-intern employees) was $59,207. The average pay for the 31 women on Obama's staff who earned more than $23,000 per year was $48,729.91. (The average pay for all 36 male employees on Obama's staff was $55,962; and the average pay for all 31 female employees was $48,729. The report indicated that Obama had only one paid intern during the period, who was a male.)

McCain, an Arizona senator, employed a total of 69 people during the reporting period ending in the fall of 2007, but 23 of them were interns. Of his non-intern employees, 30 were women and 16 were men. After excluding interns, the average pay for the 30 women on McCain's staff was $59,104.51. The 16 non-intern males in McCain's office, by comparison, were paid an average of $56,628.83.

The Obama campaign did not respond to written questions submitted on the matter Thursday by Cybercast News Service .

During his Albuquerque speech, Obama criticized McCain for supporting the Supreme Court ruling on the pay-equity issue.

"Sen. McCain thinks the Supreme Court got it right," Obama said. "He opposed the Fair Pay Restoration Act. He suggested that the reason women don't have equal pay isn't discrimination on the job - it's because they need more education and training. That's just totally wrong."

Obama continued, "Lilly Ledbetter's problem was not that she was somehow unqualified or unprepared for higher-paying positions. She most certainly was and by all reports was an excellent employee. Her problem was that her employer paid her less than men doing the exact same work."

His actions speak much louder than his failed rhetoric of "change"

from patriotism

to equal pay for women

to gun control

to taxes

this guy is his own worst enemy as well as America's

All politicians suck and are liars in one way or another, but on this one point alone:

That article unfairly compares Obama's advocating equal pay for equal work with averages for recompense across the board. For example, a middle management person will make more than a member of the cleaning crew. This article doesn't take that into account.

From another article gleaned from your own news source it can be deduced:

Obama hires men for the most senior positions.  Hired one unpaid intern.
Hil hires more women in general.  Hired no unpaid interns.
McCain hires more women but on average pays both men and women less than Obama. Hired 23 unpaid interns.

McCain relies on FREE labor a hell of a lot more than either Hil or Obama.  What kind of statement does that make?

I'm not sure, what does that statement make? People willing to work for a cause perhaps?  ::)

Not really, most interns work for nothing because it looks good on their CVs and paves the way for better future opportunities.  But the point being, your article doesn't prove that Obama pays women less for equal work, just that he has hired men for the best paying jobs.  Does that bother you?

Just makes the statement that he has raised 200 million *less* then Hillary and Barack did, so must cut corners where he can. Pure finances... :D

Obama leads McCain in the polls with women as of now, dems traditonally always lead with female voters anyway, and Obama got almost half the female vote in the primaries againest a female candidate. This all leads to Obama being way stronger on the female vote. I'd bet on that come Nov.

The point of the article was to try to prove that Obama pays women less for the same jobs that men do.  It doesn't prove that at all, just that the most senior, best paid positions in his office are held by men.  Are you saying he should walk the walk by hiring women for the best paid, most senior positions?

Well, I figured he was just cheap, but what you say makes sense.   :D

No one has really picked up on this story, probably because the figures don't match up with the actual facts.

It's amazing how facts don't add up for Obama supporters. Blind leading the blind.

Fox News, and other outlets have ran with the story on two seperate occasions.

Fox I have no doubt, would. Based on the figures, it's just sniping at Obama with distortions.

The highest paid employee on Obama's Senate staff was his male Chief of Staff Peter Rouse, who earned $80,329 for the six-month period, or $160,658 per year. He was followed by Legislative Director Christopher Lu, who earned $64,115 for the half year, or $128,230 per year. The highest paid woman on Obama's staff was Carolyn Mosley, his administrative manager, who earned about $50,000 for the six-month period, or about $100,000 for the year.

An admin assist is not going to be making the same bucks as the Chief of Staff, but of course that disparity brings down the "average" salary.  On the bright side, according to this data, you could always say McCain would be a good, frugal president since he'd have a lot of fresh-faced young people earning nothing at all.

And, you could say Obama doesn't hire enough women for high-paying positions. But that he doesn't pay women on par with men for equal work, there's nothing in your article that backs that up.

This isn't a pass. No one would pay an office manager the same salary as their Chief of Staff.

Why not find something real with which to discredit him.

Yep pretty sad.

She's distorted. You can't be in a right frame of mind and think that someone that attacked an opponent about this same issue would be stupid enough to not practice what he preaches.

I'm distorted because I know the difference between equal pay for equal work, versus recompensing people equitably for different types of employment?  In your world female dishwashers should make the same cash as male lawyers?  Okay.

YAM this one's a bust.  :)

Silly moi.  :)

Guess many people don't understand the concept of equal work for equal pay and so it seemed like a juicy dig against obama.

Not aimed specifically at you CQ, but don't get why the average working schmoe repub wouldn't want to see the bill happen. 180 days isn't enough time to gather evidence to claim a grievance, so basically people are screwed.

Four out of five moms work, and a big portion of the female work force brings in 40-50% of a family's income.  Why would anyone want their wife or love partner to earn 5, 10 or $15,000.00 LESS than the guy with the same experience, education, perf eval, etc... in the next cube? It hurts the whole family. Nothing like cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Maybe it has more to do with race and religious pay discrimination.
