Today I celebrate.

Like in celebration of his life, or because he's dead?  What was your take on him?

I champion his death Because he is no longer capable of pontificating his deranged politics.

One of the most disastrous and inhumane senators in history.

Shall no more like him EVER come along.

He protected American family farmers when no one else would...until Bush I came along and took his knees out.

Conservatives admired him for his opposition to abortion and what he called "indecent art," while liberals accused him of using race as a wedge issue to defeat black opponents.

Helms opposed civil rights and a holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was one of a small number of senators who opposed extending the Voting Rights Act in 1982

Helms was such a polarizing figure in American politics that both the left and the right invoked his name in fund-raising appeals.

He's an American and he was a politician.  You do what you have to do in order to get into position to do the work you feel needs to be done.

He protected American family farmers when no one else would...until Bush I came along and took his knees out.

In no way did he protect farming.  He supported Earl "Rusty" Butz policies of scrapping the Federal Granary and the Granary Reserve. Do you want to know just HOW BAD Butz and Mr. Helms were. Here is the result; "Butz revolutionized federal agricultural policy and reengineered many New Deal era farm support programs. His mantra to farmers was "get big or get out," and he urged farmers to plant commodity crops like corn "from fencerow to fencerow." These policy shifts coincided with the rise of major agribusiness corporations, and the declining financial stability of the small family farm."

So he and Helms basically transformed American Farming overnight and gave a giant finger to local and family farmers.  This also lowered the standards for quality as quantity was now championed.  This also inspired subsidies which has totally ruined mutli-crop planting and profit margins for any farmer. It is a total disaster.  Thankfully, we are returning to local farms via farmers markets and family owned crops.

Helms and Butz have contributed to one of the LARGEST failures in American History.

Helms opposed civil rights and a holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Most people will change positions on key issues at some point in their lives.

Helms was adamantly opposed to affirmative action, but came to accept basic civil rights as the law of the land, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

Regarding the King holiday, I have *always* believed that Dr. King himself would've been opposed to a 'holiday' in his honor.

As would George Washington, but that does not mean we should forget an integral figure of such important significance.  You see, a National Holiday is not for hubris of the individual, instead it is so that subsequent generations will always remember the actions and the impact and history of these figures.  Americans are shortsighted when it comes to history as it is.  I believe everyday we should be honoring someone from the past so we won`t forget who they are and what they did in the future.
