The parents of a blind seven-year-old who was sent to a religious school in Pakistan have told how he was hung by his feet from a ceiling and beaten to death after failing to memorise the Koran.

The parents of Mohammed Atif admitted that they had ignored their son Mohammed's repeated complaints about abuse at the madrassah.

Police in the Punjab province said that Mohammed's religious teacher, Qari Ziauddin, was now in custody charged with torturing and murdering the boy on Thursday.

Police said Ziauddin, whose title "Qari" signifies he is a mullah, had suspended the boy from a ceiling fan for an hour before he beat him. When he realised how badly Mohammed was hurt, he apparently fled instead of taking him to hospital.

All I did was point out that this kind of evil exists everywhere, and is not really unique to Islam. Where did I try to shift the blame? I siad I was well aware of this, and am glad that this was brought to the attention of the public. It is also wrong however to use it as anti-islamic propaganda, which would have you believe that this is commonplace in or unique to Islamic countries.

Creating controversy where none exists, I would suggest you back down from such hostile behavior as it is completely unwarranted. So I would ask you to please refrain from making this into a personal manner.

The only way to oust wrongs against humanity is to stick them under a microscope and publish as much as possible. In the case of Catholic priests, they were outed, rape victims came forward, and it was in the news constantly. That translated into anti-Catholic sentiment... but so what? The Church was humbled, forced to change, and serves its people at least a little bit better today.
