I think I am in the middle here. I oppose all religion and especially Islam and I DO think Islamic theology has much to do with giving motivation to Islamic terrorism, however, I also believe that US foreign policy exacerbates the problem manifold; I think these 13th century medievalists should be left to rot in their barren deserts and the West should look after itself without interfering with the affairs of these countries; of course that means that the US needs to stop being the world's policeman/bully and start minding its own business.

In Europe it is a slightly different issue. Secular/Enlightenment values were hard fought for and need to be maintained at all costs; immgration must be radically restricted and those who refuse to integrate and accept Enlightenment values can be sent off to their respective countries; once in those countries, said people (Islamists most like) should be left to rot.
and maybe even seeks to exacerbate the problem!  Hello Neocons...

But I do wonder, what country asks immigrants to forgo their customs and beliefs upon entry?

I don't think there needs to be a technical forgoal of beliefs and customs but when those beliefs, etc. stand in direct opposition to the established, secular, liberal (in the European sense) order and are acted upon, exponents of said beliefs should be shown the door.

The US did 100 years ago.  Have you never heard of Henry Ford's "Melting Pot" school? People were taught how to brush their teeth, use a knife and fork, how to assimilate. (It was kind of racist too, but nothing's perfect.  ;D)  Until recently, most immigrants who came to the US ended up being among the most patriotic citizens.

Obama told voters in Georgia on Tuesday: "Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English -- they'll learn English -- you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual?"

Rasmussen reports that U.S. voters overwhelmingly disagree with Obama:

Eighty-three percent (83%) place a higher priority on encouraging immigrants to speak English as their primary language. Just 13% take the opposite view and say it is more important for Americans to learn other languages.

It's absolutely WRONG for host countries to cower before immigrants.  But you're taking his speech a little out of context.  He was saying Americans should learn other languages to compete in today's global business world.  In that sense, he's right. Nothing wrong with being educated.

You know, I don't understand when people are going around worrying about, "We need to have English- only." They want to pass a law, "We want English-only."

Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English -- they'll learn English -- you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.

You know, it's embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], "Merci beaucoup." Right?

You know, no, I'm serious about this. We should understand that our young people, if you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get ajob. You are so much more employable. You can be part of international business. So we should be emphasizing foreign languages in our schools from an early age, because children will actually learn a foreign language easier when they're 5, or 6, or 7 than when they're 46, like me.

The language of business is English....I understand ur point but thats not all he was saying. He also must have not studied geography as well as history. How easy would it be for us to learn languages if the next foreign language country was right next door. If u live in Mass, and NH speaks german..u'd learn it. If Conn speaks Chech, U'd learn that. Everybody here speaks English....

By 2050 75% of the world will speak English.
We lose 25 different languages per week.

I was saying... I can't believe that he said that, nothing attacking you.

And yes, I'm starting to highly dislike him. First it was his sickly sweet speeches... now this shit.

P.S. Deedee, still seems like pandering to the Spanish vote to me. It sounds awful to me, even in entire context. English is the langua franca of the business world, so it's a pretty null point.

Yep, I agree with you.  Even people who complain that Americans know nothing of foreign news have no idea that the US is so big it's difficult just to keep up with what's going on in the domestic front.

The language of business is still English, but that's slowly changing as more and more people speak several languages.  It seemed that what you posted sounded like he was asking the US to bow down to immigrants, and that wasn't really what he was saying.  He was just blah blahing anyway... not looking to enact forced bilingualism.  You really do hate him.  ;D

It isn't great... I'm just a stickler for getting quotes right. Also, coming from the UK you probably don't speak any other languages yourself so it seems more threatening.  My lousy German and semi decent French have definitely made traveling easier, and got me very decent employment in the US I wouldn't have had otherwise. I'm Canadian.

Well, what can you carry a conversation with?

I don't mean comprehensive knowledge of syntax and such, just being able to speak to a local of a country without saying something weird or stupid.
