The Cindy McCain Nobody Sees

This is a good read too.  It's written by Jerry Coffee's wife.

The Cindy McCain Nobody Sees
By SUSAN PAGE

Campaigning alongside her famous husband, Cindy McCain, beautifully coiffed and designer-suit clad, reeks of Grace Kelly-like sophistication. But who is she, really?

Her husband is widely labeled a fiercely independent maverick. But looking closer, Cindy, the former rodeo barrel-racer, the private pilot, race-car-driver, humanitarian mission worker and mother of four, is easily his match in the maverick department.

Cindy McCain speaks at a campaign rally

Cindy Hensley was supposed to go to USC, get a little degree in something, come home to Phoenix and join the successful family beer distributorship. Instead she got her M.A. in special education, helping develop a movement therapy program for severely disabled children, then came home and said “No, thanks, Dad,” and started working with Down syndrome children.

She was supposed to marry some well-heeled young man from Arizona. Instead, she married a divorced Navy pilot 17 years her senior with three children and a broken body.

She was supposed to go to Washington with her congressman husband. Instead, with his blessing, she’d raise their children in Phoenix out of the political spotlight, as a single mom of sorts, while her husband answered his duty call.

Cindy McCain, healthy and young, was supposed to have children easily. Instead, she suffered many miscarriages until finally Meghan, then Jack, then Jimmy were born in the 1980s.

She could’ve stayed busy as a senator’s wife and as an heiress, entertaining, decorating and socializing. Instead, she formed AMVT (American Voluntary Medical Team) and spent her time taking emergency medical teams to disaster sites and war-torn areas - 55 trips in all.

She came from privilege and couldn’t complain about her chronic pain from repaired ruptured discs, not when innocent children suffered. Instead, she became addicted to painkillers to keep up her pace. (Her public disclosure in 1993 and ultimate recovery served to draw attention to addictions).

Cindy wasn’t supposed to have more children. Instead, in 1991 while at Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Dhaka, Bangladesh, she brought home one baby girl with a cleft palate and another with a failing heart, presenting John with a tiny surprise, Bridgette. (A family friend adopted the other baby, Mickey).

In 1996, I met Cindy at a dinner with our husbands at John Dominis. She could’ve talked about her extensive humanitarian work and travels. Instead, warm and self-effacing, she wanted to hear all about my children.

In 2004, at 50, she suffered a stroke and wasn’t supposed to recover completely. Instead, she rehabbed herself back to walking and talking normally and back to her work with children.

Who is Cindy McCain? Like most women, she’s more than meets the eye: businesswoman, foundation director, wife, mother. But time and again, one word, appears in her story, “children.” Even during her husband’s presidential campaign, she’s in Vietnam and Cambodia with Operation Smile, which performs cleft palate surgeries on children, like the one her own precious Bridgette had 16 years ago.

She’s been asked, given her aversion to the spotlight, does she even want to be first lady? Absolutely. If she can use her position to help children.

While some of her statements have been over-the-top, she's been dead-on about this president and the Iraq war in many instances. This is a Gold-Star mother who's accomplished many good things in her lifetime; she deserves some respect.

Prescription drug addiction, theft, and recovery

In 1989, Cindy McCain became addicted to opioid painkillers such as Percocet and Vicodin, which she initially took to alleviate pain following two spinal surgeries for ruptured disc and to ease emotional stress during the Keating Five scandal.  There, her role as a bookkeeper who had difficulty finding receipts for trips on Charles Keating's jet caused complications for her husband when he was already being examined for his role regarding oversight of Keating's bank. The addiction progressed to where she was taking upwards of twenty pills a day and she resorted to stealing drugs from her own AVMT. During 1992, Tom Gosinski, the director of government and international affairs for AVMT, discovered her drug theft.Subsequently in 1992, her parents staged an intervention to force her to get help; she told her husband about her problem, attended a drug treatment facility, began outpatient sessions, and ended her three years of active addiction.  A hysterectomy in 1993 resolved her back pain.

In January 1993, McCain terminated Gosinski's employment on grounds of budgetary reasons. In spring 1993, Gosinski tipped off the Drug Enforcement Administration to investigate McCain's drug theft, and a federal investigation ensued. McCain's defense team, led by Washington lawyer John Dowd, secured an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's office that limited her punishment to financial restitution and enrollment in a diversion program, without any public disclosure.

No problem mang.  I didn't know much of this about her.  Sounds like a great person.  Susan Page's husband, who was a POW with McCain, wrote a similar article about McCain:  http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=223533.0

I'm not voting for her husband, but I give her credit for her charity work. I have given to Operation Smile on several occasions, and Cindy is heavily involved with that charity.

The stealing from a charity and evading the consequences is only one reason she stays in the backround.

1.  There was the whole "homewrecking" a woman's family; having an affair with McCain while his wife was just learning how to walk again after a horrible car crash that left her disfigured and handicapped. It's human nature not to want to be with a spouse who's become crippled and unattractive, but still women probably don't like the moral lapse even today.

Nancy Reagan still hates McCain.  ;D

2. The whole war profiteering and potential conflict of interest aspect. Her company, of which she is CEO, benefits from generous war contracts which could be a problem.  She doesn't want to release any of her 2007 income tax info until close to the election... which will probably be extended till after.

3.  Her company's clashes with MADD.  Lobbying against beer companies having to put content labels on their product so people ostensibly don't know how much alcohol they're consuming. Also, lobbying to have alcohol as accessible to soldiers as possible, which didn't please the Pentagon much.

4.  CTers say she benefited from insider trading before 911, and talk about her offshore accounts, etc...

Well, she wouldn't be the first.  :P  It's just extra shitty to have an affair with a man whose wife is going through agonizing surgery, the children are already devastated by that, etc...

What's worse is that every day McCain says the war is for the good of the country, her company makes money off of it.  ;)

Anyone who has an affair with someone who is married character should be in question.

I don't disagree with you at all!!

The story is just sadder because the first wife waited for him the years he was a POW then got dumped when she became handicapped.  The new McCains lost a lot of friends on the political scene because of it apparently, and Nancy Reagan's endorsement of John recently was so terse it was funny.  :D Could be also why the religious conservatives took their time in backing him as well.

Anyway, those are all the reasons why she doesn't fly in front of the cameras.
