Chavez has done nothing wrong but to take the monopoly of Venezuelan oil from a minority, the monopoly of the airwaves from a minority and he is called a cabrón for that. It's funny, because he hasn't killed anyone, he hasn't sent any planes over other sovereign countries and dropped thousands of bombs on them, and yet he is called "the devil".
His only sin is to be sitting atop of 150 years worth of oil. The reason he is so-much hated is because he signing those contract of the oil in the Orinoco flats at a reasonable price and there are rich people who do not like that. That is why we're hearing so much negative publicity about him. Nonetheless, he is building schools in Venezuela, educating the poor classes (something that was not being done by his predecesor,) etc.
