I've Seen the Future, and It Has a Kill Switch
« on: July 25, 2008, 08:36:59 AM »
These are probably not the only kill switches instore for us :D

It used to be that just the entertainment industries wanted to control your computers -- and televisions and iPods and everything else -- to ensure that you didn't violate any copyright rules. But now everyone else wants to get their hooks into your gear.

OnStar will soon include the ability for the police to shut off your engine remotely. Buses are getting the same capability, in case terrorists want to re-enact the movie Speed. The Pentagon wants a kill switch installed on airplanes, and is worried about potential enemies installing kill switches on their own equipment.

Microsoft is doing some of the most creative thinking along these lines, with something it's calling "Digital Manners Policies." According to its patent application, DMP-enabled devices would accept broadcast "orders" limiting capabilities. Cellphones could be remotely set to vibrate mode in restaurants and concert halls, and be turned off on airplanes and in hospitals. Cameras could be prohibited from taking pictures in locker rooms and museums, and recording equipment could be disabled in theaters. Professors finally could prevent students from texting one another during class.

GM’s OnStar One Step Closer to Becoming Big Brother

Quote
Technology can hurt a driver as much as it can help him. For example, those convenient automated toll systems (i.e. EZ Pass, FasTrak, SunPass, etc.) can also use their time/distance data to figure out if you were speeding. GM may be hitting even closer to home with a new OnStar feature. Right now General Motors will use OnStar to pass on information to their GMAC Insurance arm about your annual driving mileage for possible insurance discounts.

This is purely voluntary program, and GM assures that the data will go no further than annual mileage. But how soon before they want data on speed or acceleration, all disguised under the cloak of lower insurance premiums?

The same side of me who wants to build a bomb shelter in my tool shed is also having trouble with this new OnStar service. After all, Ford is developing cars that talk to each other, GM is putting money into cars that drive themselves, and now your car wants to tattle on your driving habits. Big Brother is no longer trying to get in the passenger seat; it’s trying to drive!

I think it’s too late for me; I’ve already given in to sat nav and climate control. At least for now GM is doing no evil, and instead letting you save some additional cash on car insurance if you drive less then 15k miles a year. Besides, Big Brother technology is nothing new in cars. For almost a decade GM and other manufactures have been installing a “black box” like device that records driver stats, but your car has kept the secret to itself …so far.

GPS Determines Car's Speed Limit

In Japan the new Nissan GT-R is speed-limited by its location. As Motor Trend explains:

"Japanese GT-Rs are speed-limited for the street: As has been widely reported, unless it's driven on a preapproved racetrack, a stock Japanese-spec GT-R is limited to 180 kph (111.8 mph) with the factory settings. GPS sensors in the navigation system track vehicle position and communicate with the ECU. Try to exceed 180 kph, and a warning light will appear on the instrument panel. Only shutting the car off and restarting it will get the light to disappear.

But can be run all-out at the track: Running a GT-R at the track requires scrolling through menus in the on-board computer and selecting the racetrack option that bypasses the speed limiter. Only then can the car be run to its full potential."

This is really interesting to see. I wonder how soon til the speed-limiter is hacked. I also wonder if Nissan is going to add expansion race tracks -- making the car more like a video game. I wonder if there are insurance savings. It reminds me of the UK's Norwich "Pay as you drive" Car Insurance, which bills you based on your driving as determined by a GPS. GPSs are not accurate enough to drive by yet (you'd need sub-meter accuracy to do that), but it is really interesting to track how location determines law (or rates) and how the GPS is becoming the arbiter of that.

I've read other stories where people have hacked into it and disabled it  ;D

You know that's a good story and I the logic is sound.  It's something I have tried to beat into people but nobody gives a shit.  When I see something, I always ask what is the next step because there is a next step, there always is there always will be.  It is a must to look at everything asking what the next thing is.  But all I ever get is argument that this is no big deal.  Especially these changes we've gone through over the past 8 years in government.  People are fools not to envision potential on any of these matters.  If it's even a little wrong, we should not be so accepting.  If it's a little wrong and you can easily see a variety of negatives but not so many positives, it should be opposed bigtime.

because it's convenient for them. Then when it's necessary they'll turn on us. I don't mean to sound like a fear monger, Everyone will be trapped in their little boxes and content. I'm not against technology. I'm not a Luddite, sometimes I think I am though.  :D

For example cars, I wish people could drive better. without all the technology. Look at what we have now. We don't have more difficult training and testing we have more simplicity. It's dumbing people down somewhat.

Eventually it will kick us all in the ass. We are all dependent on computers. Especially with internet. What would we do now if we didn't have the internet, how would we get on GB everyday  :D? Imagine the withdrawal? It wouldn't be pretty. Everyone would be on edge. People are far too trusting of corporations and government. I don't know a better quote and I hate to be cliche, you know the history quote. We're doomed to repeat it.  ;)

I want to watch those documentaries by adam curtis again.

yeah they were.

I kind of went off-topic in my last post. its odd how people trust the government and corporations, what happened in the last 25 years? Sure it's been peaceful, which is nice.  :D
Other things have been happening since then. There will always be abuse at the highest level. It's going on right over peoples heads. It's to late if the majority haven't realized this yet  :( Or if they have realized it and say yeah that's the system nothing you can do about it. "I've got nothing to hide, I have nothing to worry about"

Bullshit

it's funny how many people here will say the media is biased.

Except for it wasn't biased in 2003 when everyone loved the war.
And it's not biased when it tell us about the truth behind 911.
And it's not biased if it's FOX, which is biased but only rightfully so.
