You draw the line at talent. Anyone can play nonsensical riffs and growl like an idiot. Good metal is where the the band can actually play and the vocalist can actually sing. You can be extremely hard or fast as long as it's good. I will say however, even if it's total shit, if there are people who like it and get into it, then it's good..for them.

Listened a few years to Death-metal, later some Black Metal.
Never again... but I still like Massacre(esp. From Beyond), Carcass, Deicide, Death(ScreamBloodyGore to Human) - can't remember one single name of the BlackMetal tits.
Though some bm-bands had catchy tunes.

SLAYER is the only "metal" band I still love - the rest is history.

Yeah man what is up with the growl? I just cannot get into it. DReam Theater, Skid Row, TNT, Mr. Big....Those were the last metal bands I listened to before it turned to Grunge then to (new metal) Limp Bizkit then to Emo.

Story of the Year is what I am listening to now at the gym. Pretty good stuff.

You right though. As long as somebody digs it that's all that matters

carcass in '90, morbid angel + obituary in '91

Von is alright, Leviathian is probably the best USBM band going. Summon were really great too. Nothing wrong with black metal, my newest tattoo is a graphic art piece from SunnO's BLACK ONE album.
