finasteride inhibit muscle growth?
« on: August 01, 2008, 05:28:08 PM »
anyone have any scientific knowledge of this?

i heard some people say yes, but I researched a little and found that type 2, 5 alpha reductase (which convers test to DHT) is only found on hair, sebaceous glands, and a few other places with no mention of muscle.  Finasteride inhibits the type 2 enzyme.  So, I would quess, finasteride does not inhibit muscle growth...

found the answer!

The mechanism of action of finasteride is to inhibit the steroid 5-alpha reductase, which is an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone into the potent androgen 5-alpha dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This enzyme is a Type II isoenzyme and is found primarily in the prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymides and hair follicles as well as the liver, but not the muscle. What this means is that the activity of the finasteride is confined almost exclusively to the target organs and should not affect muscle mass or athletic performance. The anti-androgen action of this medication is confined almost entirely to the scalp and prostate.

Finasteride is generally well tolerated. Adverse reactions usually have been mild and transient. The two most common side effects at the higher dose of five milligrams daily are impotence (3.7%) and decreased libido (3.3%). These side effects have not been reported at the dose used for male pattern balding.

Finasteride will not help you run faster or promote muscle mass, but it also won't inhibit your progress in your training regimen.

Dr John Crisler scared me when it comes to finasteride side effects. According to him the sexual sides aren't all that rare and are sometimes permanent!

And if you're extremely unlucky finasteride could give you a crooked penis!  :D :'(

Hi Everyone.

Dr. John informed us about this group, links to our support group are near the bottom of the post, if you know of anyone suffering from the use of finasteride please forward them the links in the bottom of the post.

Thank you!!!
----------------------------------------------------
It has come to our attention in the past several years that the use of finasteride has lead to persistent sexual side effects even after cessation of the drug for years. The complete cause of how finasteride triggers these side effects is still unknown. The drug mechanism blocks the alpha 5-reductase enzyme (ar5 enzyme). This enzyme is essential in the conversion of testosterone into dihyrdotestosterone (DHT). People suffering from this drug have noticeably disrupted hormonal profiles, however there have been some who have reported normal hormonal profiles, which leads us to believe for some the issues maybe deeper then hormonal imbalances.

Some of the reported problems, which did not exist prior to taking finasteride and have not, gone away after cessation of the drug are:

* Erectile Dysfunction
* Penile Changes (narrowing, shrinkage, curving, tougher penile tissue etc)
* Lack of Emotions
* Difficulty Focusing
* Lacking Motivation
* Penis Feels "disconnected" from head or body
* Lowered Confidence
* Watery Ejaculate
* Weight Gain
* Persistent or Unexplainable Fatigue
* Loss of Libido
* Reduced Ejaculate
* Inability to Ejaculate/Orgasm
* Lowered body temperature
* Cramps

Listed are some of the more common problems amongst sufferers.

We believe the information presented by Merck is grossly understated with less then 2% of men using the drug having experienced sexual difficulties. In reality, the percentage of sufferers is much greater and the incidence of long-term suffering is adamantly ignored.

For some inhibiting the ar5 enzyme somehow throws the entire system out balance, and the body becomes unable to find that balance even after the drug is out of the system.

If you are suffering side effects or know of someone suffering from any side effects as a result of finasteride use, it might be in your best interest to join our support group at

Those are some of the world's foremost HRT experts. Do a search on them. Peyronie's disease from finasteride may be extremely rare but the sexual sides aren't. Personally I wouldn't ever take a DHT blocker just to save my hair, but peoples priorities vary of course.

ive been using finasteride for years and never experienced any sexual sides.  regarding the athletic performance debate, when I was natural and started using it I noticed my muscles would hit their failure point 1-2 reps sooner than they did before.

one thing though, when my dermatologist gave me the prescription for it he told me not to have kids while on the drug because it has a high chance of causing deformities in babies.

i highly doubt it would hinder it to where you would notice it at all, if you are really worried just up the dosage a little to counteract it

thought it would inhbit muscle growth by preventing formation of DHT...and i thought DHT was the most androgenic hormone in the body responsible for most of test's effects....  so i thought by blocking the most powerful hormone in the body, you may interfer with muscle growth?

see the reasoning?

well, it turns out propecia only inhibits type 2 enyzme,,,not found in muscle.

yeah i read it, but i would rather not gain an extra 5 pounds and keep my hair.

also, he is using no scientific evidence to base his claims.  propecia just blocks DHT at sebaceous glands, the prostate, and hair...

so benefits:  less hair loss and acne
downside?  maybe not as potent as a cyle, but there is no proof to this, most evidence points to NO bad effects on muscle.
