Border patrol agent held at gunpoint
« on: August 06, 2008, 07:36:44 AM »

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint Sunday night by members of the Mexican military who had crossed the border into Arizona, but the soldiers returned to Mexico without incident when backup agents responded to assist.

Agents assigned to the Border Patrol station at Ajo, Ariz., said the Mexican soldiers crossed the international border in an isolated area about 100 miles southwest of Tucson and pointed rifles at the agent, who was not identified.

It was unclear what the soldiers were doing in the United States, but U.S. law enforcement authorities have long said that current and former Mexican military personnel have been hired to protect drug and migrant smugglers.

True.  It would be nice if US immigration policy was half as strict as Mexico's.

After 9/11, bush vowed to tighten the border.  He had a republican congress for 5 years after that, so he could get anything passed that he wished.

I'm not sure, but I think we can call that promise a failure.

Yes, this is probably my biggest disappointment in someone I would otherwise support.  I don't believe he has done diddly-squat about border security.

Quick, start a thread bashing obama and I'll agree with you, as long as it's based in reality and facts, and not "he dissed the troops!"

Do you think Obama has a good position on border security?

Creating Secure Borders

Barack Obama wants to preserve the integrity of our borders. He supports additional personnel, infrastructure, and technology on the border and at our ports of entry. Obama believes we need additional Customs and Border Protection agents equipped with better technology and real-time intelligence.

Improve Our Immigration System

The overwhelming majority of immigrants, both legal and undocumented, come to this country with the hope that hard work and sacrifice will secure a better life for their children. Every year, a million people enter the country legally and another 500,000-800,000 people come illegally or illegally overstay their visas. Barack Obama believes we must fix the broken system to meet the needs of the U.S. economy. Obama believes immigrant workers should have legal protections to avoid abuse and downward pressure on American wages and working conditions. He also realizes the need to increase the number of people we allow into the country legally to a level that keeps families together and meets the demand for jobs that employers cannot fill.

Obama joined Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) to introduce the Citizenship Promotion Act to ensure that immigration application fees are both reasonable and fair. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services decided to raise fees on applications to as much as $2,400 for a family of four. Obama’s bill reverses large fee increases for legal immigrants seeking to become citizens and provides grants to states to help promote citizenship. Another key choke point in the process to becoming a legal permanent resident or a U.S. citizen is the F.B.I. name/security check. Many law-abiding legal immigrants see their immigration applications delayed by months and often years as the overwhelmed F.B.I. completes their background checks. Obama introduced legislation that passed the Senate to improve the speed and accuracy of these background checks.

In the most recent immigration debate on the U.S. Senate floor, Obama fought to improve and pass a comprehensive bill. Obama introduced amendments to put greater emphasis on keeping immigrant families together and to revisit a controversial new points system that never received a proper public hearing. Obama will continue to work for a comprehensive bill that fixes our broken immigration system.

Bring People Out of the Shadows

There are millions of people living in the shadows who would like to fully embrace our values and become full members of our democracy. For the millions living here illegally but otherwise playing by the rules, we must encourage them to come out of hiding and get right with the law. Barack Obama supports a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English, not violate the law, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.

Remove Incentives to Enter Illegally

To remove incentives to enter the country illegally, we need to crack down on employers that hire undocumented immigrants. Barack Obama has championed a proposal with Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Max Baucus (D-MT) to create a new employment eligibility verification system so employers can verify that their employees are legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Reform H-1B Visas

Immigrants have helped create wealth in America’s economy. Barack Obama supports improvements in our visa programs, including the H-1B program, to attract some of the world’s most talented people to America. However, Barack Obama would like to see immigrant workers less dependent on their employers for their right to stay in the country and would hold accountable employers who abuse the system and their workers.

Honor our Immigrant Troops

About 69,300 foreign-born men and women serve in the U.S. armed forces - roughly 5 percent of the total active-duty force. Of those, 43 percent - 29,800 - are not U.S. citizens. The Pentagon says that more than 100 immigrant soldiers have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Barack Obama believes that legal immigrants who have fought for us overseas should have expedited procedures towards citizenship.

A wall needs to be built and strongly enforced.

I know the mexicans will whine about it.  so what.

But what does it matter?   Mexican truck drivers have free access to our highways anyway.....

unless the CTers are right - you know, about that giant superhighway from Mex to Can?

If there's a longterm plan to unite Can, Mex, and USA for trade, labor, and resources...

well, Bush said that all fence planning must wait until at LEAST 2012 due to limited resources.

makes ya wonder, huh? ;)

http://copthetruth.typepad.com/cop_the_truth/2008/07/obamas-immigration-policy-teach-your-children-spanish.html

Obama's Immigration Policy: 'Teach Your Children Spanish'

Does this even make sense to anyone?

I agree that our children should speak a second language. As The Chosen One points out, it's helpful if, should you choose to visit another country, you can speak their language. But why then does he say not to worry about forcing immigrants in America to learn speak English? Isn't that the same thing?

Also note that he wants your child to speak Spanish. That's because he, as POTUS, will not secure our borders, will not build the fence, will not punish sanctuary cities, will not kick out criminal aliens, will not stop entitlements and will not promote English as the primary language of the United States.

He will, however, give amnesty to the million and millions of aliens who are here illegally and have been breaking our immigrations laws all along. And yes, that includes criminals and gang members, too. We'll be stuck with all of them.

How do we solve the immigration mess that our elected officials have placed us in by ignoring the problem for some fifty years, Senator Obama?

Well, that's change, all right. Heaven help us.

Good to know your cousin from Pakistan is the authority on the nationalities of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. I'm willing to bet on my life that it's not 75%.

http://www.migrationinformation.org/USfocus/display.cfm?id=683

Approximately 65,000 immigrants serve in the armed forces.

The foreign born represent approximately 5 percent of all active-duty personnel.
The foreign born represented 4.8 percent of the 1.36 million active-duty personnel in the armed forces as of February 2008.

Nearly 11 percent of those serving in the armed forces are of Hispanic origin.

The top two countries of origin for foreign-born military personnel are the Philippines and Mexico.
The Philippines, with 22.8 percent (14,854), accounted for the largest percentage of the foreign born in the armed forces in February 2008. In addition, 9.5 percent (6,188) of the immigrants were born in Mexico; 4.7 percent (3,064) in Jamaica; 3.1 percent (2,007) in Korea; and 2.5 percent (1,372) in the Dominican Republic.

There are roughly 40,000 or so American forces in Afghanistan. If every single Mexican in the armed forces was serving over there, the total percentage would be roughly 15.5%. That is if 100% of the Mexicans in the military were over there.

Yes, safe to say that 75% of the US forces in Afghanistan are Mexican!
