Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential CandidateIn an ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE interview, Edwards Reveals He Cheated, But Didn't Father Child
By RHONDA SCHWARTZ and BRIAN ROSS

August 8, 2008 —

John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.

A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.

According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York city bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience.

Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.

Edwards said he told his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family about the affair in 2006.

Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease.

When the National Enquirer first reported the alleged Edwards-Hunter affair last October 11, Edwards, his campaign staff and Hunter vociferously denounced the report.

"The story is false, it's completely untrue, it's ridiculous," Edwards told reporters then.

He repeated his denials just two weeks ago.

Edwards today admitted the National Enquirer was correct when it reported he had visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month.

The former Senator said his wife had not known about the meeting.

Since becoming pregnant, Hunter has lived under assumed names in a series of expensive homes in North Carolina and, more recently, in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Edwards denied paying any money to Hunter to keep her from going public but said it was possible some of his friends or supporters may have made payments without telling him.

He said he would ask questions about any possible arrangement.

Announcing this on the opening day of the olympics is the least damaging way he could have done it.

Fri afternoon is always the best time to admit bad shit, but during the olympics = classic.

Maybe mccain or obama will pre-emptively admit some dirt today at 4:55 PM to get it on the record with as little fanfare as possible.

Bill Clinton cheated.

Rudy cheated.

Did Obama cheat?
No, no he didn't.

Sucks when the inexperienced liberal rookie has the moral high ground, doesn't it?

That's the thing, he's a rookie.  Give it time, my friend.  Give it time.  Either someone will out him, or he'll get more arrogant than he is now and slip up with someone on his campaign staff.

haha... honestly, I don't think so.  Obama has ice water in his veins.  I'm starting to see that.  He iced a 3 in front of thousands of people.  He spoke with poise for 200k people.  He politely thanked Patraeus for his input, but said he'll be handing the decision making.

He's a cold, cold dude.  It's the softies that give in to their urges.  Whatever drives obama, whatever dream, goal, mission, etc... I think that's bigger to him than some nut.

I'm very disappointed to find out this is true and hopefully if he's coming clean on this that he's also being honest about the kid not being his.

Either way it shows horrible judgement on his part and also goes to show you never know what's going on in other peoples marriages regardless of how they appear to the public

seriously... he has ice water in his veins.  He smiles, he speaks of hope... but that look in his eyes... he's driven.

Rudy sorta had it.

Mitt looks like a pompous goof.
Mccain has a bit of it, but his shows frustration and anger too.
hilary is a cold one too.
Bill, somewhat.

This is a shame.  I can sympathize with Edwards up to the point of cheating on his wife.  What he did was the wrong thing but that's between him and his wife.  My wife's got breast cancer like his and it's difficult for me to understand what he did when she needed him most.

From his point of view though, when the kitchen's closed, a hungry man's gotta eat.  That's a cold joke.

Sorry about the news with your wife, Deck.   :(   I'll keep the family in my prayers.  My mother-in-law has gone through 3 bouts of breast cancer and it has now metastasized into her body.  Luckily, her cancer is slow growing.  I'm praying for you, Deck.

Decker are you going to file a paternity suit action in family court?

You should have told him to finish in your mouth, not your vagina.  My condolances.

Thanks Colossus.  My wife's cancer isn't terminal like Edwards's wife.  She's going on 2+ years with no recurrence.  The whole life/death and disfiguration of the disease can drive anyone nuts.  I just don't see how cheating helps.  My wife's a big supporter of his wife and she's very disappointed to say the least.

Why would he say that he looks forward to having a DNA test? He should have just stated the baby is not his, and drop it, but looks like this story will continue now.

Geesh so it is his assistants baby,  :-X

What was this women's job exactly?
