in 2004 us still 36 but germany only 13

I find it interesting how world events played a huge impact on the number of medals... For instance, in in 1904 the games were in St. Louis and almost no other countries showed up (for whatever reason) and the US steamrolled everyone.

Anyone know why almost no one else showed up?

WWI wasn't underway yet, so what gives?

i took 3 weeks on a ship to travel to us in 1904

also it was to expensive for most athletes (all amateurs)

Yes, but it was no so lopsided the previous olympiads... Nor those immediately following when transportation hadn't really changed.

in 1900 Paris and 1904 the olympic games were integrated in the contemporaneous held Exposition Mondiale (EXPO) and the events were spread over several months.
So the interest in the games was very small

China implemented some program to win more medals this year. They're supposedly targeting events with multiple medal opportunities in a desperate attempt to win the most medals. Probably going after the events no one cares about. They get smacked around in the majority of the most popular sports.
