BEIJING (AP)—Michael Phelps set a world record Sunday to win his first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics, beating rival Ryan Lochte in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds.

Phelps, trying to break Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals, crushed his old mark of 4:05.25 in the 400 IM, set in June at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Laszlo Cseh of Hungary rallied to take the silver medal in 4:06.16, while Lochte faded to the bronze in 4:08.09.

Larsen Jensen also brings home Bronze in the 400 free.  Odd that the Chinese came in for Silver...usually they are not good at this event.  Guess the drug program is working well for them.

Man, I'm loving the Olympics at the moment - even the boring sports like archery and rowing. One of my old friends from school competed in the women's coxless fours (rowing) this morning - her name is Katherine Grainger - she has already won two silver medals in previous Olympics. The Brits won their heat today against the Germans - now they've got to beat the Chinese in the final but it's gonna be a tall order.
