Muscle Beach Party Movie - Set Your DVR
« on: August 11, 2008, 09:20:51 PM »
Hey all you muscle movie fans:

The Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel is showing Muscle Beach Party this coming Wednesday morning at 4:15 am ET, 1:15 am PT.

Of all the Beach Party movies, in my view, this is not one of the better ones.  However, if you've never seen it, you might find it fun.

If I recall correctly, there's one, maybe two, quick shots of the first Mr. Olympia, Larry Scott, in it.  Some of the others on this board, like Stuntmovie, may know more than I recall.

Yea, that was a pretty embarassing movie to say the least. There were a whole bunch of beach movies made back then in an attempt to ride on the surfing craze and Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon were the screens teenage wonders.

Peter Lupas was the only guy who lifted weights and was relatively known back then. Larry Scott had a small part as one of the Jack Fanny's corral of bodybuilders but he was unknown except for the very small number of people who ever saw a bodybuilding magazine or talked to him during those days he hung out around Santa Monica Beach.

Here's the rest of the "bodybuilding" guys and gals you'll be seeing in that movie.......

Bob Seven    ...   Rock
Larry Scott    ...   Riff
Steve Merjanian    ...   Tug
Chester Yorton    ...   Sulk
Dan Haggerty    ...   Biff
Gene Shuey    ...   Mash
Gordon Case    ...   Clod
Alberta Nelson    ...   Lisa
Amadee Chabot    ...   Flo

It looks like someone spent a good deal of time coming up with these character names. I met most of them at one time or another back around that time period and continued to run into Larry Scott throughout the ensuing years. Larry gave the only bodybuilding seminar that was worth a damn with a close second most interesting by Mike Mentzer.

Reps, I had a little help doing the research, but I did know or meet most of those guys at one time or another.

Shortly after that movie (1967) Hollywood made a movie in the Malibu area called "Don't Make Waves" with Tony Curtis and Sharon Tate among other leading actors/actresses at that time. Dave Draper had a darn good role in that one and did a good job.

Chet Yorton and Reg Lewis had small parts in it also.

Sharon Tate was killed in Los Angeles in 1969.

Here's a photo of Ed Holovochik, Mae West, and Reg Lewis take back then around that same time period. Reg had made some of those sword and sandals flicks. Ed did some kind of nightclub act and disappeared from the bodybuilding world as far as I recall. And Mae West appeared on stage (escorted by Burt Goodrich) to present Dave Johns his trophy the year he took the national title at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. (The great old days of bodybuilding!)

While I'm writing this a name popped up in my memory bank .......... Von Lamon!!! What ever happened to Von and can anyone locate any photos of him when he was winning contests?

Yes, he did, although they kind of 'emasculated' him by making him non-sexual and more interested in winning the 'Mr. Big Boy' contest than the girl.  ::)

Doc, I forget the storyline but was "the girl" Sharon Tate?

I do know that Dave was real upset when she was killed.

Stunt, I'm a bit foggy, but as I remember it, Tony Curtis plays mind games with Dave and convinces him that being celibate/true to his training is the only way to win the contest, and so he can steal Dave's girl. Not very believable given the girl, the beach and Dave. Dave's 'girl' was Sharon Tate, who, sadly, did not get much of a life. All in all, one of the better beach movies. Fun.

Yea, it was a good movie. I remember Dave talking about it and the scene where he climbed down the rope to save someone in the house that slid down the hill. I think that house actually did slide down that hill just prior tot he filming of that scene. That happens a lot on that part of Highway 1 or is it 101?

I agree with your assessment of Larry.

One of the best, if not THE best, ever.

A Gentleman.

And best seminar ever, indeed.
