How come "miracles" don't happen anymore?
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:27:28 AM »

How is it that, in the age of technology that we live in where everything can be caught on film and broadcast on TV and on the world wide web, there have never been any "Miracles" ?

But back in the olden days there were SO MANY miracles, which people wrote about, and if they were hardcore, even painted them or drew them?  But today in our time of Live Action, nothing happens?

miracles are actually ancient wisdoms/stories passed down verbally from a time of antiquity (pre Egyptian pre Mayan civilizations)

Sure there are lots of Miracles.  David Blaine, Chriss Angel, David Copperfield.  All magicians.  A lot of what people thought to be miracles was nothing more than shitty magic tricks but people were so naive that they beleived these people to have had special powers.  Guessing that someone picked an Ace of spades 2000 years ago would have had your name in the Bible instead of Jesus.

I agree big ach there are just none these days at the olympics like in the past I think drugs helps that out....we can safely assume now the preson who responds bests to drugs will win gold and its been proven now too easy.  Look at past olympians who claim natural and now 10 years they are busted.......

Miracles, as you call them, still happen but for the most part they are not called miracles anymore because modern science has been able to explain them as natural phenomenon.  Once we understand something via science, we no longer consider it a miracle.

We talked a bit about this in the Exodus thread. http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=181584.0

In Hundu, Durga is worshipped as a goddess (she has eight arms).  Many people in the modern world would consider that nonsense, but last year in Bagalore India a baby was born with eight limbs and she was worshipped by the faithful as a reincarnation of Durga.  (Eventually she underwent surgery to remove the extra limbs of her conjoined twin.)

Similarly, earlier this year, a baby with two faces was born in India and she too was worshipped as a reincarnated god.

In ancient Greece when people saw lightening in the sky they thought it was the finger or wrath of god (Zeus) but today virtually everyone understands how and why lightening is produced in the atmosphere.

In interviews with fishermen and villagers in some of the remote parts of Asia affected by the tsunami in 2004, survivors who went to high ground talk about reading the signs that the “sea gods” were angry so they knew the ocean was going to pull back from shore and then come rushing in causing a huge flood.  Most people reading this do not believe in sea gods; we understand the tsumami was caused by an underwater earthquake.

In the novel Angels and Demons (the same author wrote The Da Vinci Code) one of the characters, Maximilian Kohler, the chief scientist at CERN, lectures Robert Langdon about ancient gods being false.  Science, he says, has proven them to be false by explaining many of the things that were previously attributed to them.  Soon, he says, ALL gods will be proven false by science.  It is a provocative dialogue but much of what he says about science killing off “the gods” and the miracles attributed to them is actually true.

It's not like he was in a wheelchair and did that. He was expected to win those.
