How does age affect Women's gymnastics?
« on: August 14, 2008, 11:30:20 AM »
I'm not sure what's the big deal about age in women's gymnastics.  Is a 13 year old better than 16?  You'd think a 16 year old would be stronger and better.  Or is the US just looking for an excuse?

I was thinking the same thing, if those girls are under age, wouldn't that be a disadvantage to them?  :-\

Gymnastics is hell on the joints and even by the age of 20 the vast majority of women have had several major surgeries on top of multiple broken bones, fractures etc.  Most female gymnasts at the Olympic level by the age of 13 have been training 8 years already, they start very young.

The only thing I can think of is the effect puberty has on balance and such.

The size usually fucks things up for girls as they age they become taller & heavier this throws their equilibrium and a lot of times the girls can't compensate for the changes , I've heard stories of some countries using drugs to stop girls from growing for this reason , I don't know if thats true but puberty tends to end gymnastics careers

INJURIES INJURIES INJURIES, also at young age you tend not to think much about the circumstance or understand the magnitude of situation you are in, like the Olympics you arn't as nervous as say a 20 yr old sacromone who knows what she is up to do.  Also fearlessness is apart of that as well, as you get older gymnist wise fear factor of getting injured plays a part, so age is a huge thing.

The Chinese start training them at three. When they hit 12 or 13, they're at their absolute peak. That's about as good as they're going to physically get on their training regimens. By the time they get to the age of the other gymnasts, their bodies are breaking down and they're already on the downside of their careers. They also have better recovery times and are less injury prone.

Also, as one of the commentators said, young kids have no concern for injuries. They're willing to go to anything lengths and have no fear as they really have no grasp on the entirety of the situation. They just go out there and do what they've been doing for the last decade.
