Advice please. Sumo v Conventional
« on: August 20, 2008, 01:43:58 PM »
Ok. Had back injury here deadlifting anything off the ground was sore. I tried sumo today with a weight which was uncomfortable in conventional style (only 200lbs) and with sumo it did not hurt. Form was also much better and i was able to deadlift. ROM felt tiny

I am over 6'3 btw and my ROM was reduced sumo by 6 inches. I am interested in developing this providing i keep recovering and getting better.

what i am asking is what are the pros and cons of sumo? At my height is is normal to deadlift sumo style? Is it possible or likely i will exceed my onventional deadlift with sumo style?

What are the disadvantages? I am also going to squat with a wide stance also as it seems that i dont round my back when i do so. I have a terrible habit of this.

Thanks

you're better off just laying off deads completely until your back heals.

hitch deadlifts are the best(hitch row up over the knees then go upright to save precious lower back muscles) since it focuses on rowing muscles and everything isnt all centered on the lower back like conventional styles

the lower back is something you dont want to fatigue or strain , most all other muscles except abs can handle fatigue or strain without injury

I just glanced over this post by Goudy.

Did he mention how tall he was in it?

Just give it a go for a few months.

Guys with really strong legs usually do better pulling sumo.

Seen plenty of guys pull big numbers either way, just find what works for you.

Let your back heal first.

I dont have strong legs though.

Maybe just because it was so light the reduced ROM made it feel that way.

Though no probs at all with the back.

Thanks for the advice.

Even if i get to 400 sumo and beack healed ill just drop back to 330 and start conventional again if 400 feels much tougher than it did conventionally

Let the injury heal and stay conventional. Very few cats have success going sumo.

IM no powerlifter so I prefer doing rack deads------Im 6 ft tall and regular deads kill my back no matter how I do them----the rack deads work my back fucking great and Ive never had a strain in my lower back from doing them

Id rather do legs on leg day :P  and save my lower back since its an easy thing to fuck up permanantly
