Tribute thread to America.
« on: August 21, 2008, 04:27:27 PM »
Drop the hardcore politics for this thread. (in other words, post whatever but we all get along for a moment)  Post pics, songs, words or whatever that highlights some part of American culture, history or life; if you're not from America, post something you like about America.  A fun thread to lighten things up a bit and maybe remind us all that despite our differences, we might have something in common?

Probably the best things about America is that everyone has an oppurtunity to be financially well to do, own/have access to the basics like a home/shelter, have transportation. Quick and easy access to good food, clean water, etc...You can peacfully protest, (generally) without fear of reprocussions, can be openly critical of where it falls short without being arrested by the secret police.

Good thread.  I agree with BD.  Let me just brag about my family a little.  My parents are immigrants and came here with nothing (no money, no education).  Despite that, my siblings have done the following:  brother has a MA and could have a PhD but doesn't want it; one sister just earned her PhD a couple weeks ago; another sister dropped out of college to make babies; another sister has a learning disability and still graduated from college (extremely proud of her).  Only in America.   :)

My parents were in the same situation. No money, no education and no english language but learnt how to speak english, (my dad even wrote books), have a big house paid for, raised a great family. Not many places in the world where people in that situation can turn things around and make something of themselves. I feel fortunate.

both sides of my family are from Wyoming going back to the late 1800's and early 1900's.  Oil men on one side and rancher/coal miners on the other. Pretty mundane, nothing special to tell, yet there is an undeniabable pride I have in my family--despite any differences, I'm kind of the oddball ;D

I can go back farther, back east and have grave pictures from the 1700's in Pennsylvania.  Maybe someday I'll get out there and see them.

This song makes me want to enlist.

6 years ago my band would play it in bars in redneck country, and everyone in the place would get emotional, angry, or serious.  We do love your fcking country.

Well obviously, the country was founded in 1776, so nothing prior to that. I meant to say nearly every technological advance we use today was spawned in America. Before the Japanese, before the Germans, before anyone.

Maybe you should start a thread for those countries.   ;)

I'm all for bigging up the US. But saying "nearly every technological advance we use today was spawned in America" is not only false, it's very offensive.

You want to make tributes to the US based on falsehoods?
