My skills suck and no doubt about it. I'm crazy for Judo these days tho so wanted to get your opinion of the scene. My sensei runs yearly trips to Japan so I think he has a fair few connections.
My study of the language has [again] fallen off. Hard when surrounded by Aussies. Gotta get back to it.
Sorry to say so, but "yearly trips to Japan" doesn't mean a shit. I know martial artist that have been to some shitty "gaijin conventions" or "gaijin dojos" for 20 years or so and have NEVER seen a real dojo. (Same with Zen, btw. Visiting the temples that take on foreigners is utterly stupid.)
It's better to visit a seminar in Australia, write a recommendation letter and have it signed by a japanese sensei leading the seminar or sth like this. Then go and search a good dojo in Japan and go there, best to call before or write a mail. The Kodokan should be open to everyone i guess, but don't go to the gaijin lessons, if they have any.
As for japanese, you can learn it without being in japan, just make sure you have enough japanese around.
