Gallup Poll: Obama Gets No Bounce From Biden

A recent Gallup Poll taken after Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s selection of Joe Biden as his vice presidential running mate shows no bounce in voter support leading up to the party’s national convention taking place in Denver.

The survey, taken during the three-day period after Obama’s Saturday morning selection, shows Republican challenger John McCain with a slight lead over Obama, 46 percent to 44 percent, which is about where the candidates polled a week ago.

The 46 percent voter support received by McCain is the most he has held since Obama clinched the Democratic nomination in early June.

Historically, presidential candidates tend to get a bounce in polling numbers immediately after announcing their vice president, usually worth between 4-9 percent, and an additional boost in the polls upon completion of the convention.

The Gallup Poll shows Obama’s support actually declined by 2 percentage points, from 46 percent before his vice-presidential selection of Biden to 44 percent.
