Democratic Convention Racks Up Big Ratings
Amy Schatz reports on the presidential election.
More than 38 million people tuned in Thursday night to watch Barack Obama accept the Democratic nomination at Denver’s Invesco Field, Nielsen Co. reported today.
The historic final night of the convention received, as expected, the highest ratings of the gathering, drawing more viewers in all of the demographic categories that Nielsen tracks, including all age groups.
Hispanic viewers, in particular, tuned in Thursday night in greater numbers, with an estimated 5.2 million households watching during 10-11 p.m. EDT, when Obama spoke. During the previous three days of the convention, anywhere from 1 million to 1.4 million Hispanic households tuned in to watch, Nielsen figures show. The number of African-American households watching last night also jumped by about 3 million compared to the other three nights, which attracted around 4.5 million African-American viewers.
Overall, the convention drew an average of 30 million viewers a night, about 10 million more than the 2004 Democratic convention, Nielsen reported.Nielsen tracked viewers watching NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, BET and TV One.
PBS was not included in the Nielsen ratings but it released a statement early Friday that public broadcasting stations attracted about 3.5 million viewers Thursday night with an average of 3 million throughout the convention.
