Listeriosis Outbreak: Updated Recalled Products List

Nine people are dead and many more are sick after a terrible listeriosis outbreak struck the country. Eight of the deceased are from Ontario, and the latest fatality was in British Columbia.

"There are 15 deaths among the confirmed cases. Listeriosis has been identified as the underlying contributing cause of nine of these deaths," confirmed Dr Mark Raizenne of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency late Friday.

With a 70-day incubation period for the illness that number could rise significantly in the weeks and months to come.

And that infection is linked to tainted meat from a Maple Leafs Foods facility in North York. Word of the crisis first emerged nearly two weeks ago.

As the days pass since the link between listeria and tainted meat was first proposed, the list of recalled products grows. As the company works diligently to assuage a worried public's fears, a new set of items has been pulled from store shelves.

Here's a complete list of the forbidden foods, including applicable product code, product name, UPC code, package size and best before dates.

The recalled products have an establishment number of 97B and carry best-before dates up to and including the dates listed.

Officials Announce Tenth Death Linked To
Ongoing Listeriosis Outbreak

The confirmed death toll of the listeriosis outbreak rose to 10 Saturday as federal health officials blamed the outbreak for a death that occurred in Alberta, the first such fatality from that province.

Kristen Woboditsch, 36, of Grande Prairie, Alta., died in mid-August but the listeriosis link was only confirmed by Alberta Health officials in a phone call to her mother on Friday night.

"I think everybody thinks the same thing -- it won't happen to me," Mary Hicks of South River, Ont., told CTV News on Saturday. "But unfortunately, it does happen to everyday people."

She said finding out left her with "anger and grief, all mixed up together."

While she said the knowledge provides some closure, it also raises many questions.

"All the food-borne illnesses that are floating around this country of ours -- there's anger toward that, that Canadians have to be subjected to this type of lackadaisical attitude toward food safety.

"I want her death to be counted, and for people to know this is a real hazard out there."

Dr. Gerry Predy, Alberta's chief medical health officer, said Woboditsch had other health problems and added he couldn't pinpoint whether listeriosis was the direct cause of death or just a contributing factor.

"Whether listeria was the actual cause or the underlying cause is very difficult to determine," he said.

Six other deaths -- four in Ontario and one each in Saskatchewan and Quebec -- remain under investigation for possible links to the outbreak.

In total, 31 cases across the country have been conclusively linked to the outbreak, and an additional 32 suspected cases remain under investigation.

Health officials have linked the outbreak to meat products from Maple Leaf Foods -- the company launched a massive recall of products from a Toronto plant earlier this month.

Maple Leaf took out full-page ads in newspapers Saturday, in which president Michael McCain said it was the company's expectation that all recalled products had been removed from store shelves.

Meanwhile, health officials added more products to the list of recalled items Friday night.

Dr. Brian Evans, execute vice president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, said while it may seem that the list of recalled products is growing, the additional recalls reflect the fact that several different products were made from the recalled meat.

"Many of our recalls relate to products such as sandwiches and pre-packaged meats meats carrying best-before dates that have now already expired," Evans said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

"Nevertheless, in the public interest and in the interest of openness, we feel it is important that such info is visible."

The challenge we face on this side of the border, is that the conservatives never seem to quite understand the difference between the two, ...and it is the public that always ends up paying the price, ...all too frequently with their lives.

Death Toll Rises In Listeriosis Scare,
11 Deaths Now Blamed On Outbreak

The number of confirmed deaths from the Listeriosis outbreak that has triggered a series of recalls of processed food products has increased to 11.

Dr. Mark Raizenne of the Public Health Agency of Canada says the latest death is from Ontario and "likely occurred in the past several weeks."

The outbreak so far is either responsible or played a contributing factor in nine deaths from Ontario, one from Alberta and one from B.C.

Another six deaths are suspected and still under investigation -- four are from Ontario with one each from Quebec and Saskatchewan.

The number of confirmed listerosis cases has climbed Sunday to 33 from 31 the previous day, but the number of suspected cases has dropped from 32 to 25.

Health officials have linked the outbreak to processed meat products from a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.

Maple Leaf issued a recall of virtually all the products produced at the plant and that has in turn sparked dozens of recalls of ready to eat sandwiches made from the Maple Leaf products.

Those at risk are the young, the elderly, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems, according to the public health agency.

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said the government and Canadian health agencies are working around the clock to keep the public informed of the situation.

Earlier Sunday, Canada's food inspection agency issued a warning to people in the B.C. communities of New Westminster, Surrey and Langley not to eat certain sandwiches that may contain tainted meat.

King Bean Wholesalers is recalling its roast beef subs or kaisers sold in these locations, but so far no illnesses have been linked to the sandwiches.

CEO Points At Cause For Listeria Outbreak

The man atop the company most chiefly-associated with a recent and deadly outbreak of food-borne Listeria spoke to the public's growing concerns Friday, pointing to a potential cause behind the costly outbreak.

Maple Leaf Foods CEO Michael McCain spoke at length about the bacteria's spread and what a subsequent recall and investigation have yielded.

The company's plant on North York's Bartor Road was closed on Aug. 20 despite evidence of the contamination only being linked to two specific production lines.

Using "third party experts to guide our investigation," McCain said, "we've arrived at what we feel is the most likely source of the Listeria contamination."

McCain suggested two identical slicing machines were at fault, with the bacteria lingering "deep inside" their mechanical components.

"Upon complete disassembly of that slicing equipment, areas were found deep inside the machines where bacteria may have accumulated and avoided our rigorous sanitization procedures," he explained.

The location of a service elevator, floor drains and tote bins may have also been contributing factors, McCain added.

The Maple Leaf boss also noted that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's investigation into the plant as well as the outbreak's cause continues.

"We continue to actively support and collaborate with them on these," he insisted.

McCain went on to outline the company's deep sanitization of the plant including the following measures (courtesy Maple Leaf Foods):

• Working with our customers, Maple Leaf quickly completed the recall of products from retail store shelves, which is being followed up with visual inspections of customer shelves. All foodservice products from customer and distribution warehouses have been recalled.
• The slicing equipment on lines 8 and 9 at the plant have completely torn down and deep cleaned, with multiple tests conducted to ensure they are cleared of any contamination. Similar slicing equipmentacross the Company's other plants has also been deep cleaned and tested, and will continue to be done regularly.
• The Bartor Road facility has undergone five intensive sanitations and extensive testing throughout the plant to ensure the sanitization is complete and effective.
• The Company has increased the depth and frequency of its already rigorous testing and sanitation procedures across all its meat plants.

In total there have been 38 cases of Listeriosis documented across Canada. Thirteen of them have proved fatal, with the majority in Ontario.
