Cooking steel cut oats in microwave?
« on: September 01, 2008, 01:32:22 PM »
Just got some steel cut oats.  Problem is they only have stovetop directions on the back.   I want to cook them in the microwave because I don't have a lot of time in the morning to cook these on the stovetop.    For those who cook steel cut oats in the microwave can you recommend how much oats and water to use for a single serving and how much time in the microwave?

Thanks.

I put 100g to a bowl, add water still it mask the oats, then put it to microwave for 30-60 sec at highest power.

I would make a large batch stovetop and refrig or freeze individual servings, then nuke as needed.

I put 'em in a bowl, add water until it's just below the surface of the oats.  Nuke for 2 minutes, remove & stir (add more water is it's too dry), nuke for another minute.

I add milk to mine.  If you don't, add more water to make the thickness you want.  Couple of tries and you'll have it down.

Thanks for the tips, but It appears some of you are thinking of rolled oats and not steel cut oats.  Steel cut oats definitely will take longer than 2 minutes to cook.  They are completely different than regular rolled oats, in taste, texture and cooking time.

BTW, all oats are cooked (steamed) shortly after harvest to stop them turning rancid.  All you're really doing is rehydrating and heating.

This is probably the best idea, I use Cinnamon and apple sauce to make it taste better.
