One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi “F-in’ Redneck” Johnston.

It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.

Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325

Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

ALL money that is spent on these conventions is ridicolous....she might have worn a $300K suit but how much was Obama's stage un Denver?

We need campaign spending limits

Obama and his billion dollar in ads, could have done alot for the homeless in America, nevermind it could have rebuilt many towns in Louisiana

exactly....american spending is out of control.  Not just government..movie stars, athletes, CEOs etc...Imagine what america could do with the millions paid to A-Rod, Kobe, Brad Pitt etc...there would be no such thing as poverty.

True but those are individuals and they can do as they please with their privately earned money, many however give back to the community all of those you mentioned have given well over millions of dollars to various charities, Pitt has cut 1 million dollar checks left and right to Katrina victims. Also no matter the spending, it always sees a return come back to the United States.

good points...it just makes me sick to see both nominees travel the country in private jest and host million dollar conventions when we could use that money so much better somewhere else

Nothing wrong at all with spending like that if you have the money, and nothing wrong with asking for donations. But it is amusing to stand there having inherited [not worked for] massive sums of money wearing an outfit that costs 5 times more than the average annual wage - and asking others to donate money.

As a chickish aside, I thought it looked terrible anyway, only an outfit a heiress would wear. Strange yellow color, tutu like skirt like 5yrs old, collar huger than Elvis all pointy looking and that with the shiny material made it look like Star Trek :-X

Laura Bush, as always, looked so nice and classic next to her didn't help. No wonder unlike most wives, Cindy really doesn't get the fashion mag press.

And why was Romney complaing about someone having a private jet. Doesn't he?

I don't think the jewelry should count in the "cost of the outfit."  Many women always wear their wedding rings unless they are being repaired.....even to the gym.  That would make our sweaty workout "outfits" kinda pricey too.

STella, love you but most womens wedding rings cost what maybe $5,000 or so?

Not many women at any point in their life wear $300,000 worth of anything in one day, irrespective of details.

Some folks don't even live in houses worth that.

But if we follow the Vanity Fair guidelines it looks like even the gals w/$5000 wedding rings would be wearing an approx. $5000 workout outfit.

The money that was spent created income for the people that worked to put all that together.  Giving away money is rarely a good idea.  Hope that helps...

True, but the people gave to Obama's for his campaign... He has yet to use any "public" money.
