I am a Mother of 3. 2 girls 1 boy. I do have a job which is for 3 hours, 2 days a week helping out at the corner store. It's only really to get away from the kids and play some keno while I'm there. I receive section 8 and have a nice 4 bedroom apartment in Milton which costs $200/month out of pocket. Welfare sends me spending money every month. Food stamps pay for our food. We get about $950/month for food. I also receive WIC because one of my girls is 1 1/2. That is another $200/month. When tax time comes I receive about $6000/year because of the kids from the EIC plus got a nice bonus from the stimulus this year. My boyfriend lives with me and takes home about $3000/month. Of course he isn't on the lease, thats not allowed. As far as I'm concerned what the government don't know the better.
If I were to work I couldn't get more than $10-12/hour. If I worked I'd lose all of my benefits including section 8. If I had to rent this apartment it would be about $1800/month. Me working 40 hours a week would make me about $300 take home pay. Not even enough to cover the cost of the apartment let alone food, clothes, etc.
My Mom wants me to get a job because she says she is embarrassed to have a kid on welfare and receiving government benefits. I drive a better car than her (06 Lexus RX 350) and my apt is much better looking than my parents house.
I am in no way giving all of this up to save her some embarrassment. Anyone else have parents like this? Why should I struggle when I can stay home, raise the kids and do what I like whenever I like?
