OBAMA TRIED TO STALL GIS' IRAQ WITHDRAWAL
« on: September 15, 2008, 10:32:39 AM »
WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops - and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."

"However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open." Zebari says.

Though Obama claims the US presence is "illegal," he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the "weakened Bush administration," Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate.

While in Iraq, Obama also tried to persuade the US commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to suggest a "realistic withdrawal date." They declined.

Obama has made many contradictory statements with regard to Iraq. His latest position is that US combat troops should be out by 2010. Yet his effort to delay an agreement would make that withdrawal deadline impossible to meet.

Supposing he wins, Obama's administration wouldn't be fully operational before February - and naming a new ambassador to Baghdad and forming a new negotiation team might take longer still.

By then, Iraq will be in the throes of its own campaign season. Judging by the past two elections, forming a new coalition government may then take three months. So the Iraqi negotiating team might not be in place until next June.

Then, judging by how long the current talks have taken, restarting the process from scratch would leave the two sides needing at least six months to come up with a draft accord. That puts us at May 2010 for when the draft might be submitted to the Iraqi parliament - which might well need another six months to pass it into law.

If it wasn't for that SOB Bush, poor Barack could be focusing on saving the poor and downtroden instead of worrying about this mess....

This is similar to when Reagan / Bush made their deal with the Iranians to keep the hostages in the US embassy until AFTER they got into office. That's where the similarities end. The difference is then, ...the US was being held hostage. Here, ...it is a folly of their own making, and Obama wants to make sure it is an orderly, and wise withdrawal. The agreement Bush signed with the iraqi's is only valid until the end of his term. Either side can tear it up at the end of Bush's term, ...therefore, a withdrawal now could not only prove disorderly, it could prove to be very choatic and dangerous because we don't know what Malaki is going to do, or will be capable of doing.

::) Jaguar with another irrelevant rant totally absolving a democrat of personal responsibility while adressing something not even remotely involved with the election in 2008. We should be discussing Palin's kids and the Bush Doctrine, not what Obama does !

A historical comparison could be relevant.  It's totally messed up if Obama is trying to manipulate things to benefit his presidency, so he can be seen as 'rescuing' us from the war.  that's terrible of him.

I'm curious if he's being obnoxious and bold on his own, or if leaders in the past have interfered.  Does anyone have other examples of incoming presidents (or candidates) rocking the boat before theyre onboard?

If this is true, Senator Obama should be exposed for playing politics with the troops.  If it's not true, Senator Obama should refute this immediately as he stands accused of crippling a US President, undermining negotiations with a foreign power, handing strategic control of our forces in Iraq to Congress, etc. Just on diplomacy, interfering with the United States in its diplomatic efforts is a Logan Act violation. Interfering with war policy treads on even more serious ground, especially since the primary motivation appears to be winning an election without regard to whether it damages our ability to fight the enemy or drives wedges between us and our ally, the elected, representative government in Baghdad. To paraphrase McCain: Obama would rather lose the war than lose the elections. As with the rest of the left, Obama is fully invested in defeat in Iraq. It gives them something to cry about.

All in all Obama proves once again what a worthless individual he is.

Why is the onus of responsibility on him to deny every silly charge?

Why hasn't palin denied charges it's not her baby?  Why hasn't Palin answered critics who condemn the fact she let her kids drink lots of Crown Royale?  Why hasn't palin answered charges about her hubby being part of a sessissionist group?

Right.  Because they're baseless charges, right?  What evidence do we have this politician from Iraq isn't just saying something Bush asked him to, in exhange for whatever $3 billion we're sending this week?

You apparently think this responsibility falls on Palin, so why not?

yeah, and even if an "aide" made the mistake, it took the AP calling her on it before she corrected it.

240 If i have to explain to u whats important and whats not then maybe u shouldn't be on the board. One is tabloid bullshit while the other is about how the junior senator from Ill. is meddling in US foreign policy.

I think it's safe to say that there are those who are fully expecting Gov. Palin to refute all of the various rumors being passed (by the minute it seems lol).
