DENVER (AP) — How does Barack Obama lure wealthy donors to a big-money fundraiser in Hollywood? Bring in Barbra Streisand as the headline performer.

The Oscar-winning singer and actress was to perform Tuesday night on Obama’s behalf in Beverly Hills. It was to be a two-step evening with a reception and dinner costing $28,500 a person followed by a later event featuring Streisand at $2,500 a ticket.

Obama was flying to Los Angeles after an appearance Tuesday morning in a Denver suburb.

The wealthy fundraiser comes on a day when the crisis in the U.S. economy remained an urgent issue for many Americans. Monday’s sharp sell-off left the Dow Jones industrials and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index down by more 4 percent, eroding the value of individual retirement and investment accounts, for example.

Streisand originally backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton but switched to Obama when he emerged as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Streisand has been outspoken in criticizing John McCain’s selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

“This calculated, cynical ploy to pull away a small percentage of Hillary’s women voters from Barack Obama will not work,” Streisand wrote on her Web page. “We are not that stupid!”

“I believe John McCain chose Gov. Palin because he truly believes that women who supported Hillary — an experienced, brilliant, lifelong public servant — would vote for him because his vice president has two X chromosomes,” Streisand said. “McCain’s selection of Gov. Palin is a transparent and irresponsible decision all in the name of trying to win this election.”

Obama is financing his presidential race with private contributions after abandoning a pledge to take public financing capped at $84 million. His campaign announced Sunday it had collected $66 million in August, a fundraising record for any presidential candidate in a monthlong period.

By comparison, McCain raised $47 million in August, a personal best for his campaign as well. After claiming the GOP nomination, McCain accepted the $84 million in taxpayer funds allotted the public financing system for the race.

If you were to do it right, just running for president would net you millions and millions, would it not?  Campaigning for these guys is like touring for a musician, pretty much the same thing isn't it?

Wrong.

Candidates in the primaries drop like flies due to not being able to raise enough money.

The Republicans are hilarious.  They tout money-making credentials and pretend to be at the top financially when everybody knows Democrats are the superior investors as well as hold the wealth in America.  The Republicans then decry and disown (perhaps out of envy) anyone savvy with the dollar with the ability to generate a lot of them. Yet they pretend to cater to the wealthy but hate anyone REALLY wealthy.  It is a strange ceiling they create for themselves.   With that said, The Democratic party is huge tent from the poor to the extremely wealthy.

Republicans just pretend to have money.  It is all a sad act.  For the most part they are comprised of middle-class wannabes who THINK they are part of an upper class aristocracy when in reality they are in debt to their eyeballs via the SUV that shuttles little Bobby and his 3 brothers to little league.

The other half of the party is what I would call ignorant, low-information values voters.  Both halves freely wield bigotry, racism and fear as part of their weak arsenal.

We all know America is better than that.  The GOP is dying.  This is a good thing.

Unfortunatly, this is true to a large extent. Take the biggest two metropolitan cities out of every state, and you would have something like 46 red states.

Take out SF and LA, and even California is almost a complete red state.

The left is extremely weak outside of their motropolitan element.

RNC is loaded.  Many believe they'll concede the senate, and focus all their money into the mccain basket.

I think that was the plan until Obama began to tank and put some areas into play.

haha you just owned yourself..ok lets take the 2 biggest metro areas out of every state. as you mentioned, lets take LA and SF out of california

Cali population:  around 35m
LA metro population: 17.5m
SF bay area population: 7.2m

LA and the bay area alone comprise roughly 2/3 of california's population.

now, lets take out the other large citys

san diego: 2.9m
sacramento: 2.3m
fresno: 1m

so basically 31 million out of 35 million californians live in the 'metropolitan element'. so yeah, take out the 'metropolitan element' and SURE ENOUGH, all of the 4 million remaining rural dwellers get you a red state!!!!

give me a break, the cities should rightly make these decisions, the 'metropolitan element' is where the educated people are, where the innovations and progress are made...the rural dwelling remainder is where the old fashioned, stubborn uneducated religious and racist ideologies hold sway.

haha..'take out the urban centers'...THE URBAN CENTERS ARE WHERE THE BULK OF THE POPULATION IS.
haha ok then. take out the rural areas and every state becomes blue.
