Here's the kind of dumb thief story that makes you realize that crime really doesn't pay. At least not for one alleged crook in West Penn Township, Pennsylvania. Police in the small city near Allentown, claim a man walked into a convenience store on Sunday morning and asked to buy some cigarettes.
The clerk thought the 23-year-old looked under age, so he asked to see his I.D. The customer dutifully produced his driver's license, complete with his picture, name and address, then suddenly pulled out a knife and demanded money - even though the clerk already knew who he was.
At this point, the guy behind the counter realized he wasn't dealing with a master criminal, so he tried a bluff, telling the would-be robber that it was against store policy to give him anything unless he bought something first.
That was enough to confuse the weapon wielder, who promptly shoved the cigarettes back across the counter and told the clerk to forget the whole thing. He then raced out of the store and into a car, before disappearing in a screech of squealing tires.
Cops are looking for a man named John Maculloch on robbery and assault charges. And they may also be able to add driving without a licence to that list - he allegedly left his permit behind when he gave up on the nefarious plot.
