Difference between hair plugs and transplant?
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:10:59 AM »
Anyone know the difference between hair plugs and transplant?  I keep hearing people refer to them differently, like hair plugs are fake hair or something.

I had a friend who was balding really bad, and me and my other buds used to crack on him.  Well one day we were fucking around with him and he just stormed out angrily, and we havent seem him since.

The word on the street is he got hair plugs, and now has a full head of hair.  We apparently bashed his fragile psyche to the breaking point. :-X

Both are essentially a "transplant" because they are removing your own tissue and transplanting it to a different part of your scalp.  But its spoken separately because of this:  Plugs are when they remove individual hair follicles one at a time and their base and move them to the bald spot.  Transplants are when they remove a whole section of scalp (about an inch thick and a couple inches wide) from the nape and move it to the bald spot.

Plugs are the old 5 hairs at a time bunched up and planted in the scalp giving the Barbie Doll look. Now it's done one hair at a time, each hair planted in the scalp taken from a graft of hair on the back of the head. The latter giving a natural look unlike the old Barbie Doll.

Cool thanks Top Dog as well, I always wonder why people accuse Arnold of having plugs, his hair looks natural.  Are there any pics of people who have had plugs you can find that look like this?  Do they still do hair plugs, just curious about topic?

Ya, the main difference is old vs. new technology. The newer methods being quite convincing the older looking strange and propogating the impression that hair replacement's never effective, which is not longer true.

Its just terminology........Plugs & Transplants are interchangeble terms...  Transplants are what "Bosley Group" call it, or they prefer the term "Hair Restoration"!!!!    :-X

Correct, 15 years ago they did "punch" grafts, which were 1/4 inch round grafts they "punched" out.

Today they do "follicular unit" grafts which is how hair grows.

Hair grows in bundles of 2-5 hairs-a FU, they cut a long strip out of hair about 1/2 inch wide and 6-10 inches long and disect out the follicular units.

Thats it,
