A Florida man named Scott Weires has canceled the order for his long-awaited Nissan GT-R. Why? It's not that he was disappointed in the car's performance credentials, far from it. The problem is that the GT-R is equipped with a 'black box', similar in theory to the kind found on airplanes to help determine what went wrong in case of an accident or breakdown. By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker, Nissan in this case, deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability. Nissan's GT-R carries an on-board recorder that keeps track of the past few day's worth of driving and cannot be disabled. In the case of Scott Weires, an attorney no less, that was enough to look elsewhere. Would it be for you?[/glow

my BMW already has this crap, they know if I do anything bad that would void the warranty. They knew I had a headlight out even before I did and emailed my azz about it.

I really just figured that it would have it when I went into the dealer. If they can have GPS and wireless setups in the car, I figured that they would have some sort of 'big brother' bullshit in it too. The manufacturers look for any possible way they can not honor the warranty, and that's a perfect way to get you. You can't lie against the computer.

he's a neurotic idiot. Ferraris have had black boxes in them for years. And a limit edition Nissan GT-R will def. have one.

At least he's not in japan, in Japan all GT-R's are limited to 112 mph. And any attempts to have tuners  try and get more power from the engine or adjst the susepnsion, will mean the warranty is voided.

the article implies that it will be law for ALL cars, not exotic 300k cars, to have black boxes. by 2012

In ANY car, if you circumvent the governor or even put a chip in, it voids the warranty.

With BMW they have an agreement with Alpina and Dinan in which they still keep the factory warranty. And many afterparts  such as exhuasts and intakes systems are ok'd by the facotry and will not void the warranty. But the Japanese Gov't and Nissan have worked real close together so that any thing done by an aftermarket tuner to the GT-R will void the warranty. IF you put no spec tires on it, etc.

Here's an article on how Amuse a Japanese Tuner company cracked the GT-R's computer code and have unleashed 600 + hP, but the warranty is voided
