Why McCain Bailed: 3 stories, 5 rallies and 12 states
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:04:38 AM »

McCain campaign chose to have a bad day rather than a disaster

McCain 'suspended his campaign because of 3 bad stories, 5 Obama/Biden rallies and 12 competitive states

Today the McCain campaign was facing 3 disastorous campaign ending stories;

1) Davis and campaign tied to Fanny Mae taking $ 15,000 a month up to just a few days ago. The campaign was so terrified of this story that they started the day with a 2 page attack on the New York Times about it.

2) Palin Troopergate. Under all of the hubbub today the campaign quietly announced that they were going to refuse to answer anymore questions about Troopergate.

3) Palin on the $ 26 million road. This story is having even better legs than the 'bridge to no where'. My Republican neighbor just brought up that even if your really against the bridge why would you build the road? The road proves that she is a liar. Moreover it is the first day of the Stevens trial and all of the stories that he and Alaska are the number one 'earmarkers' in the country and Palin supported them.

TV Commercials - The McCain campaign was looking for any excuse to stop the TV commercials.

Whatever your reason for not having rallies there is no reason not to advertise - unless your running out of money.

Here again Obama campaign has made a major strategic move. They have concentrated their media buys in red states like IA/NV/FL/VA/IN and brought them close. I believe that the McCain campaign was preparing for a 5-6 state campaign where they would be outspent but still felt that they could compete. Now however Obama has made it into 12 competitive states and the McCain campaign does not have the resources to buy media in all of these states. Also spending now is not considered as effective as the last two weeks in October (although early voting is changing that somewhat).

Rather than announce that you can't compete in 12 states better to find a lame issue of principle and keep your money and hope that in the next two weeks the number of states that are actually going to be determinative is reduced to 6-7. Unfortunately some red states like Iowa and New Mexico have moved too far out to be considered worth any investment.

Did McCain have a bad day. Of course but they avoided having an absolute disaster. They avoided wasting money on ad buys they are unsure of, they weren't having any rallies anyway, and nobody is talking about the corruption and conflict of interest stories that would have been major stories on any other day.

ON Edit: I should have added that I don't think that McCain is going to miss the debate, that is a faux move. There will be an agreement or atleast an agreement in principle, McCain takes credit for that and shows up for the debate 'unprepared' and has an excuse for his lousy performance.

His only excuse is that he is scared of getting his ass kicked on live television.

Maybe we should start a thread on why Obama didn't want to come? Could be because he's part of the problem and didn't want to show his face?

Obama, like mccain, isn't on the committee that solved this.

Show his face?  Um...
Obama is flying to DC today along with mccain to meet bush.

Becuase Bush (the PRESIDENT) requested him to be there.

mccain wasn't there either.

yeah, bush probably called mccain and told him first.  Mccain is arriving in DC about 3 hours ahead of Obama today.  Both arrived after the work was done on the bill, since economic finance isn't either of their strong suits.

Just admit it, mccain showed up when the work was done to put his name on the paper ;)

At least he made an attempt while Obama just called in sick.

If he hadn't stuck around to do a campaign event this morning, it would have been a lot more believable.

He could have done the press conference at 3 PM yesterday and been in DC by dinner to work on the plan, late into the night, like the rest of the senators.

I'd rather that McCain (who in his OWN words called himself a deregulator -- which was the main cause of this whole mess -- and who was one of the Keating Five) skipped it. What benefit could a "fundamental deregulator" offer?

This just shows McCain is unable to handle too many things at once.

It happens when you get really old.

Did he really suspend the campaign and rush back to washington? Nope.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/25/during-suspension-mccain_n_129280.html

Quote
McCain's hasty exit didn't find the candidate beating a path to the halls of power, to lay hands on the nation's economy. His next stop was to sit down with Katie Couric, after which, he went...nowhere? You know, despite all the danger the country was in. Today, his surrogates have been out on teevee, in clear contravention of the suspension order. Nicolle Wallace and Tucker Bounds both appeared on MSNBC, sandwiching themselves around a campaign appearance McCain made himself at the Clinton Global Initiative. Meanwhile, at 10:00 am this morning, the actual leaders on this matter began their actual work on the bailout package. It's fair to say that they've already outpaced all of McCain's contributions on the bailout matter, even if we include the lovely set of talking points his campaign drew up for campaign volunteers to use in discussion -- you know, the campaign volunteers whose activities are supposed to have been, uhm...suspended.

But McCain is an honorable man, after all, and he is, at some point, coming to Washington, at President Bush's behest, not in pursuit of personal ambition, but of Solutions for America, right? Right? At AMERICAblog, Joe Sudbay notes that today's schedule of events casts doubt on this contention:
At 4:00 p.m., (ABC News reported via email) George Bush, whose approval rating on the economy is at 16% with a 76% disapproval, will be hosting the White House photo-op (that's what Barney Frank is calling it). John McCain will be there for that session.

Let's be clear: McCain will miss the meeting about substance. But, McCain will be there for the grandstanding.

Obama hasn't been to DC in 20 months.  Why start now?  He is a professional campaigner...not a politician.
