well, at any given university in the us, there are usually many students from china, south korea, and india.  at my university, just these three nationalities account for more than 50 percent of all international students.  they are usually pretty well organized, have their own student associations, etc, so it is hard not to speak one's native tongue.  on the other hand, if you come from iceland or lithuania, you have no choice but to speak english so you tend to improve it more.

another thing is the field of study.  i know international students who, for example, study computer science or mathematics where there is no need to "talk" much.  for five years it is sufficient to say "let x be any real number.... then it follows...." and write a proof on the board.  students from those departments tend to suck at english, no matter what nationality.

Why the fuck do they come here if their goal is to improve their English, become better aquainted with Western culture, etc.? No, all they do is hang out with other Japanese and Chinese people and then complain that they speak too much Japanese or Chinese; duh. If I were in China or Japan I would have to bend to their rules and they don't realise how fucking lucky they are here...Westerners have 10x worse in their countries.
I feel like I am living in Asia again in the middle of the UK. Anyway, rant over.

I was wondering if the UK was like the US in that it has a bunch of idiot voters.

In America, the 'stupid vote' is definitely available. The Republicans get it every election. You have probably noticed on these boards that there are Americans who think Iraq was behind 9/11, Obama is a secret Muslim, etc. etc.

I was wondering if there was a large contigent of stupid people like that in the UK. I would say they make up 15-20% of the voters in the US. Unfortunately, they decide elections.

  They want to learn English and get an American university degree - preferably Ivy League - exclusively for professional reasons. They have no interest in American culture or Americans, for that matter.
