Obama 'Truth Squad'
« on: September 30, 2008, 03:46:16 AM »
~Awesome

What if I told you that sheriffs and prosecutors in, say, Indiana, had formed "truth squads" and "subtly" threatened prosecutions of critics of John McCain?

Well, there is a "truth squad." It's in Missouri. It includes prosecutors and sheriffs. Oh, and they have formed their truth squad to threaten and intimidate the critics of ..... Barack Obama.

Transcript:

News Anchor, first name Russell: Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign has asking Missouri law enforcement to target anyone who lies or runs a misleading television ad during the presidential campaign.

News 4's John Mills is live at the County Election Board in Maplewood. He's been learning more about which members of law enforcement are getting involved in this. John, tell us more about this.

John Mills, reporter: Russell, good evening. Prosecutors and sheriffs from across Missouri are joining something called the "Barack Obama Truth Squad." Two high-profile prosecutors are part of the team. We met them this afternoon in the Central West this afternoon. They are Jennifer Joyce of the city (and) Bob McCulloch, the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney. They will be reminding voters that Barack Obama is a Christian, who wants to cut taxes for anyone making less than $250,000 a year. They also say they plan to respond immediately to any ads and statements that might violate Missouri ethics laws.

Jennifer Joyce: We want to keep this campaign focused on issues. We don't want people to get distracted, and Missourians don't want to be distracted, by these divisive character attacks. So we're here to respond to any character attacks, to set the record straight.

Bob McCulloch: Whether it is directly attributable to the campaign, or to one of the soft-money operations, if they're not going to tell the truth, then somebody's got to step up and say "Wait a minute, that's not true. This is the truth."

Mills: Now the Obama campaign tells News 4 that others, prosecutors and sheriffs, are also part of the team, including some from the Kansas City area, and from rural parts of Missouri. We're also told the truth squad is expected to include Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyle. Live in Maplewood John Mills, News 4.

Has anyone here ever heard of frivolous lawsuits?  They can lead to censure, court costs and disbarment.

I don't think there's a lawyer out there worth a damn that would bring frivolous lawsuits based on a political campaign.

However if the libel charge sticks then it is not frivolous.  The threshold for criminal libel is such that, short of having the libelous statement incite a riot or be OBSCENE, I don't see anything coming of this but a waste of my time.

I think the article mentions criminal prosecution, not lawsuits.

Maui?  Take this in the best way possible: I hate you.

That's a weather/scenery related criticism.  The wife and I watched a Magnum PI this weekend and the views were beyond words.

We are talking about taking a trip to your fine state.  I hope it happens.

lol.  :)  I've been to Magnum's house.  It's in one of my favorite towns (Waimanalo).  Absolutely gorgeous part of the island.

Be careful about visiting this place.  You might fall in love with the islands and never want to leave.  I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

If you do visit send me a PM.

Coach it's about the same.  Housing costs are about the same as San Diego, L.A., and S.F.  Gas prices are about the same.  Food is a little more expensive.  The Mexican food sucks.   :'(  Taxes are higher here.  It's probably more expensive to do business here.  We've been trying to make the place more business friendly after 40+ years of total Democrat control, but we still have a ways to go.  Our Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs has a very good website that tells you much of what you need to know to start a business.     http://hawaii.gov/dcca

What kind of business are you thinking about?

Same as we have here in California, training. We currently have a total of 80 clients about 50-60% athletes, also boot camps with a total of about 120 people and for athletes strongman camps. It's starting to go over well in Guam.

There are good opportunities for trainers here, but the rates are much lower than the mainland.  Top of the scale is generally around $100 to $150 or so.  There might be a few people charging more, but I haven't heard.

There is a tremendous opportunity on the "Leeward" side of the island.  We have for years been trying to develop Kapolei as the "second city" (in addition to Honolulu).  Most of the new housing is on the Leeward side.  They have a fairly new mall.  Tons of people.  They're going to build a new university in the next five years or so.  They're building a new marina.  They're building a new courthouse.  If we can get over some hurdles, they will build a rail system connecting the Leeward side with Honolulu.  The traffic is very bad (from Leeward to Honolulu).

If you're seriously thinking about it you should get in touch with onlyme.  He knows the market as well as anyone.
