Are you talking about the book or movie? I always figured that they murders were only his fantasies, his way of working out his deviant and homicidal rage at the world, but as his lawyer said he was too cowardly to follow through with it (not saying that mass or serial murder is heroic)

1. His lawyer didn't have lunch with Paul allen just someone he thought was Paul allen. There all conformists and there all alike amongst people in there circle and to those outside it as well.

2.I don't think he wants to get caught but he was sure after all the attention he drew that night he was going to be caught. So he confessed to his lawyer to give him the best chance to deffend him.

3.This comes from the book Patrick and Jean have a much deeper relationship. While Evelin is his wife to be he would perfer to be with Jean. It would never work out Patrick is all about appearance and he would much rather marry a socialite than a secretary.

1. Like someone said before, Carnes had lunch with someone whom he though was Paul Allen. And he also though Bateman was Davis at first, but then realized it was his client and probably assume he just had a hard day of work.

2. He wanted some kind of validation for his crimes. Some sort of credit.

3. If you read the novel, you'll see that he's really affectionate about Jean. That's why he lets her go.

Nothing in American Psycho is a fantasy. If you read Ellis's last work Lunar Park which is part true to life, part fantasy he talks more about the Patrick Bateman character. He goes into how insane the character is and how creating the character has bothered him even some 20 years later. He even goes as far in the book to write Patricks death out hoping it would resolve his personal issues with the character. So everybody that wants to believe Patrick never murdered anybody your wrong, he kills 10 times as many in the book.

I've read the novel and saw part of the movie.

1.Their refusal to acknowledge him is a demonstration of how surreal and out of touch the 80s yuppies were.
They were so locked in their rich little world that nothing could shake them into reality. Bate was mocking them.

2.He wants to get caught because of his ego. Serial killers end up leaving clues, because subconsciously they need validation.
They want all the credit for their well planned crimes. Again, it boils down to control. By terrorizing whole communities, they feel powerful.

3.He let his secretary go because again, serial killers usually murder to gain a feeling of power over others.
As his secretary, he already had her bending to his will.

Does he send the starved rats up the woman's vagina in the movie?

I mean, I know they couldn't show it, but was it at least implied?

That movie had so much potential.

I had to laugh when the guy that is supposed to be king of assassins, fires off all his guns on a mark,
at a range of the front yard, and doesn't manage to hit once.

Also, that Hannibal Lecter bit was over the top.

Haha, yea, that part isnt the most realistic. :-\

Only watched it once but...

1. For the same reason the real estate agent doesn't call the police even though she knows damn well that he's a killer.  Deep down, no one really cares.  They're busy pursuing their own agenda and don't look past the end of their nose.  The only character in the movie who objects to Bateman's actions is the bum's dog.

2. Bateman believes that people will do the right thing and try to arrest him.  The joke is that the world is sicker than he is and no one can be bothered to stop him even when he tells people point blank that he is a serial killer.  People care even less about others than the guy who murdered them.

3. Again, Bateman believes he'll be caught if he kills her.  At that point in the film the audience would agree, but the film goes on to demonstrate that there are no consequences or restrictions to Bateman's actions other than those he places on himself.  Even the serial killer can't fathom how little the world cares about its inhabitants.

Its all one delusional evil fantasy played out in Batemans mind.

When i read the book and saw the movie i came to the conclusion Bateman was psychotic and his fantasies were just delusions.

If i remember in the movie the secratary finds his journal with his evil delusions drawn.

1 and 2,His lawyer tells him reality which he can not grasp.

3.The theory that his secratary was not murdered is to confirm his delusions at the end of the story,

I wish i still had the book that i read over 15 years ago, but study the last chapter and interpret yourself.
