fish oil advice!
« on: October 09, 2008, 12:51:39 AM »
From Charles Poliquin:
The best thing you can do to manage insulin is take fish oil. Research has shown that if you take three grams of fish oil with a high sugar meal, your insulin response is much smaller. Don't take all your fish oil at once though; spread intake throughout the day. Would you eat all your protein for the day at once?

Taking fat with any high GI meal will blunt the insulin effects, not just fish oils. Fish oils do have additional effects however on glucose/insulin metabolism to be sure, and getting the right dose as a % of the active lipids is essential:

one of the mechanisms through which fish oil works to aid in glucose metabolism is similar to how metformin works.. by slowing the initial absorbtion of glucose in the digestive tract and slowign the livers output of glucose.. however fish oils do more than that they also sensitives muscle insulin receptors while desensitizing adipose insulin receptors as well as a moderate boost in thermogensis (basically just the rate you burn calories)and a boost in protein synthesis (if eating to build) and protein sparing effect (if in a defecit)
