Zogby: It's 48 Obama, 44 McCain

Saturday, October 11, 2008 11:25 AM

The latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll of likely voters nationwide shows Democrat Barack Obama enjoys a small lead over Republican John McCain, with little change coming in the last day of a three-day tracking poll of the race.

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average taking more than a 1,000-point swing Friday and Congress adjourned until after Election Day, likely voters were little moved one way or the other, the poll shows. About 9% remain undecided with 24 days until the election.

The rolling telephone tracking poll, including a sample of 1,208 likely voters collected over the previous three 24-hour periods spanning four calendar days – approximately 400 per 24-hour period from Oct. 7-10, 2008 – shows Obama holding a lead now of 3.8 percentage points, virtually the same as his 4.2 percentage point lead yesterday.

Obama enjoys a lead in the east by a sizable margin, while the race is statistically tied in other regions of the nation. The Democratic presidential candidate also continues to lead among independents – by nine points in this latest rolling average, down a point from yesterday.

The poll was conducted by live telephone operators in Zogby’s in-house call center in Upstate New York and carries a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.

This daily tracking telephone poll will continue each day until the Nov. 4 election, keeping in touch with the daily twists and turns in the race for the White House. With each new day of polling that is folded into the poll, the oldest third of the survey is replaced with the fresh data, so the poll “tracks” changes in voter attitudes following events and developments in the campaigns.

Still 4 points according to Zogby.

Zogby Tracking: Obama 48, McCain 44

Saturday, October 18, 2008 9:06 AM

UTICA, New York - The race for President remains at equilibrium, 12 days into the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking poll, which shows Democrat Barack Obama winning 48.3% support, compared to 44.4% for Republican John McCain.

Seven-point-three percent of the likely voters surveyed said they remain undecided.

Obama lost four-tenths of a point from yesterday's report, while McCain gained six-tenths of a point. It was the second consecutive day in which Obama's numbers slipped and McCain's numbers increased.

Despite two presidential debates and a continuing worldwide financial markets meltdown that occurred and intensified during the polling over the past two weeks, support for the candidates has remained remarkably stable. Obama has increased his support

You mean the poll done a week ago or the poll today?  Is this a trick question?  I'll go out on a limb and say the poll taken today is more accurate than the one a week ago, even though they show the same numbers.

Ah so.  I don't know.  Zogby did a great job during the primaries.  They're pretty similar to Rasmussen, which shows Obama up by 5.

John's a real nice guy but I've always agued that polls are more about how the question is framed. The Clinton election really put him (and Utica) on the map but I still don't have a lot of trust for polls.

Zogby: McCain Is Gaining, Race Tightens

Sunday, October 19, 2008 11:14 AM

Republican John McCain continued a slow advance on Democrat Barack Obama in the race for president, moving back within three percentage points as the race begins to head down the stretch run, the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking poll shows.

McCain now trails Obama by 2.7 points, down from the 3.9 point deficit he faced 24 hours earlier.

Seven-point-one percent of the likely voters surveyed said they remain undecided.

Obama lost five-tenths of a point from yesterday's report, while McCain gained another six-tenths of a point. It was the third consecutive day in which Obama's numbers slipped and McCain's numbers increased.

McCain has once again moved above 45% support overall, a mark he has not seen since the second day of daily tracking reports. Obama's slip under 48% support is the first time at that level in nearly a week. He now stands within one-tenth of a percent of where he stood when the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking began almost two weeks ago. McCain is within two-tenths of a percent of where he was when the tracking poll began.

During the 13 days of the tracking poll, Obama has led by as much as 6.2 points and as little as 1.9 points.

Except for a few hours of polling, this three-day rolling average of telephone polling now includes a sample taken entirely after the final presidential debate last Wednesday.

The tracking poll includes 1,211 likely voters across the country who were surveyed between Oct. 16-18, 2008, at the rate of about 400 per day. The survey, conducted using live telephone interviewers calling from Zogby's call center in Upstate New York, carries a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.

McCain made a big move Saturday among independent voters, cutting's Obama lead from 16 points to just 8 points. Now, Obama leads by a 46% to 38% margin, with the balance of independents either unsure or supporting someone else. McCain's strong performance at the Alfred E. Smith charity dinner in New York City Thursday, combined with his appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman Thursday night, may have had a positive effect. Other Zogby polling has recently shown that independent undecided voters tend to prefer consuming their politics in such entertainment venues. Obama was also praised for his performance at the Alfred E. Smith dinner.

Both candidates have remained strong among their political bases - McCain wins 90% of Republicans, compared to 88% of Democrats who support Obama.

Men are now, again, tilting very slightly in favor of McCain, who leads by just two percentage points among the group. Among women, Obama leads, but only by six points.

Obama continues to win 18% support among conservative voters, while McCain wins only seven percent among liberals. Among moderates, a demographic that includes substantially more Democrats than Republicans, Obama leads, 61% to 33% for McCain.

Among those who consider themselves investors, McCain retains a small, four-point lead - helpful but no where near as large a margin as Republican George W. Bush enjoyed over his Democratic rival four years ago.

Released: October 19, 2008
Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby Poll: Obama 47.8%, McCain 45.1%

McCain slowly gains on Obama

UTICA, New York - Republican John McCain continued a slow advance on Democrat Barack Obama in the race for President, moving back within three percentage points as the race begins to head down the stretch run, the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking poll shows.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama's lead over Republican John McCain in the presidential race has dropped to 3 points, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Sunday.

Obama leads McCain by 48 to 45 percent among likely U.S. voters, down 1 percentage point from Saturday. The four-day tracking poll, which has a margin of error of 2.9 points.

Pollster John Zogby said the numbers were good news for McCain, and probably reflected a bump following his appearance in the third and final presidential debate on Wednesday.

Whats ur point TA....wishing away the shift to a tight race won't make facts go away. Hope is not a method...

Yeah.  The race is still tight.  I think the Powell endorsement could seal it for Obama, but it's not over.

What's interesting in all of this is that, at best, Obama has about 52 percent?

Why isn't he blowing McCain out of the water?

While I still think it's Obama's election to lose a McCain victory would not surprise me.

Zogby, Gallup.....it doesn't matter.  Its all about the Electoral College....otherwise Al Gore would have beaten George Bush as he had more votes than he did
