Turns out that “Joe the Plumber,” as he became nationally known when Senator John McCain made him a theme at Wednesday night’s third and final presidential debate, may run a plumbing business but he is not a licensed plumber. His full name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher. And he owes a bit in back taxes.

An official at Local 50 of the plumber’s union, based in Toledo, said Mr. Wurzelbacher does not hold a license. He also has never served an apprenticeship and does not belong to the union.

“All contractors are licensed, and he does not have a license, either as a contractor or a plumber,” the union official said, citing a search of government records. “I can’t find that he’s ever even applied for any kind of apprenticeship, and he has never belonged to local 189 in Columbus, which is what he claims on his Facebook page.”

According to public records, Mr. Wurzelbacher has been subject to two liens, each over $1,000, one of which — a personal tax lien — is still outstanding.

“We have his named spelled W-O, instead of W-U,” Linda Howe, executive director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, said in a telephone interview. “Handwriting is sometimes hard to read. He has never corrected it in his registration card.”

The records, she said, showed he voted Republican in the March primary.

First let me clairify that I know contractor laws well.....at least here in California, saying that it doesn't differ that much from state to state exept Oklahoma where a contractors lic is not needed unless it's changed.
I also know how most construction Unions work. They think if you we're trained by a Union and have gone through their Apprentice programs, you must not know how to Plumb, roof, frame or whatever. Couldn't be further from the truth so the "he was never any apprentice" line is complete bullshit. As for the "he's not a licenced contractor" line, well that's bullshit as well. You don't have to be a licenced contractor if your an employee, as a matter of fact, you don't have to have license to own a contracting business, the only condition of that is you have to have a licenced person listed in the corporation or as part of the business. Also, at least in California, contractors lic law states that you CAN do work as any UNLICENSED contractor if the value of the job is $500 or less including materials. So if the law is similar in Ohio, this guy can lawfully have several jobs going at once and make a small fortune. You clown, I swear more liberal spin.

When you take into account he is unable to pay his current taxes, one would think the tax cut he stands to gain under an Obama presidency, might just be the ticket he needs to pay his bills and perhaps save up a little money to get himself licensed, ...and then perhaps buy the business. John McCain did great tonight in the debate. But every time John mentioned “Joe the Plumber,” some of us in the campaign banged our heads against the wall. If Steve Schmidt had any hair left, I hear he would have been pulling it out tonight. He reportedly screamed at John’s debate prep team tonight (out of earshot of reporters, of course). “You idiots - he’s related to Charles Keating… of the Keating Five scandal!” They thought they had a real live Joe Six-Pack who’s spurned Barack Obama’s tax plan. But what they forgot to do was check on Joe Wurzelbacher’s background.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Does any of this make Joe the Plumber a bad guy? Of course not. But on a night when McCain accused Obama of guilt-by-association, this isn’t going to look good for us. Hello, but on a night when John goes full bore on William Ayers and dodges a bullet by Obama not mentioning Keating Five, the press is going to bring it back front and center by midday tomorrow once they delve deeper into the most popular plumber in America.

Wurzelbacher said he worked under the license held by his boss, Al Newell of Newell Plumbing and Heating Co. of Toledo. Newell is a licensed plumbing contractor in Toledo, records show. But anyone working under Newell should have a journeyman’s plumbing license or an apprenticeship license according to Ohio State Law, officials said.
