McCain-Palin use the 'S' word

About time.  That's exactly what "spread the wealth" is all about.

McCain-Palin use the 'S' word
Posted: 01:52 PM ET

From CNN's Peter Hamby, CNN's Steve Brusk, CNN's Tasha Diakides

CONCORD, North Carolina (CNN) – John McCain stepped up his rhetoric against Barack Obama on taxes in his weekly radio address, comparing his plan to 'socialist' programs that would “convert the IRS into a giant welfare agency, redistributing massive amounts of wealth.”

The remarks were part of a theme McCain has used since the final presidential debate that criticizes Obama’s philosophy, but his most recent comments were the first time he directly invoked the word 'socialist.'

In the radio address that aired Saturday morning, McCain didn't directly call Obama a socialist, but he let the now-famous Joe 'the Plumber' Wurzelbacher nearly do it for him.

“You see, [Obama] believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that help us all make more of it. Joe in his plainspoken way, said this sounded a lot like socialism,” McCain said.

In an interview with ABC last week, Wurzelbacher said Obama's proposal to raise taxes by 3 percent on those making $250,000 and over is a "very socialist view."

Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin has used the word in speeches the last two days as well.

Also in the pre-taped radio address, McCain said, “At least in Europe, the socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives. They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Senator Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut it's just another government giveaway.”

McCain did not repeat the wording in his appearance at a rally in Concord, North Carolina Saturday morning, where the latest CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows the two candidates tied at 49 percent.

And on the campaign trail in Concord, North Carolina, he added that Americans have seen spreading the wealth around in other countries before.  But he did quote Obama as saying he wants to "spread the wealth around."

"Spread the wealth around. We have seen that movie before in other countries and attempts by the liberal left before," McCain said.

In his speech, McCain also said said, “This explains some big problems with my opponent's claim that he will cut income taxes for 95 percent of Americans. You might ask: How do you cut income taxes for 90 percent of Americans, when more than 40 percent pay no income taxes right now? How do you reduce the number zero? That's the key to Barack Obama's whole plan: Since you can't reduce taxes on those who pay zero, the government will write them all checks called a tax credit. And the Treasury will have to cover those checks by taxing other people…the Obama tax increase would come at the worst possible time for America.”

Asked why McCain used the word socialist in the radio remarks, a spokesman told CNN, “That’s what it is, 'spreading the wealth' around is socialism.”

In a July interview with the Kansas City Star, McCain said Obama had the “most extreme” record in the Senate. He said at the time in a comment he has since repeated on the trail, “his voting record… is more to the left than the announced socialist in the United States Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont."

Pressed if he considered Obama a socialist, McCain shrugged and said, “I don't know."

In remarks this week, Palin has referred to Obama’s encounter with Wurzelbacher in Ohio last Sunday. At a rally in West Chester, Ohio Friday where one banner in the crowd read, “Obama is a Socialist/Marxist," Palin said, “Joe suggested that that sounded a little bit like socialism,” she said. “Whatever you call it, I call it bad medicine for an ailing economy, and it’s what Barack Obama will do to those who want to create jobs and we’re willing to call Barack Obama on it.”

Yes, but they're not socialists. They don't spread the wealth. They take it from everyone else and give it to the rich.

A crime.   >:(

McCain could have turned this election upside down by voting against the "bailout."

You're right, I'm wrong.

They are just greedy and using taxpayer money to protect their legacy.

You do realize that if the banks weren't saved it wasn't the rich people who would have suffered since they got plenty in their bank accounts but the private people that have funds there and will need to try and get in line to get their money fighting big corporations that want their money too.

Although it was a shitty situation and no one like it, it was for the small man. I think that with this bailout they need to do some very restrictive laws to prevent shit like this or similar (reasons that caused banks to crash in the past) to happen again.

Post and let us know the very second one thin dime of that money makes it into your hands. :)

There were no restrictions on the first disbursement and banks aren't even making loans with it. The whole thing was a scam, especially considering only 6% of mortgages were in foreclosure. Even buying all the 'bad' mortgages would have only taken $100B.

The middle class are the guys that get squeezed, the poor will always be poor either by bad situations or their own stupidity. The rich will generally stay rich either by hard work, luck or inheritance. The folks in the middle are trying to get to where the rich are, and when banks and other institutions fail, we suffer. We can't pay our workers, get credit, move up etc. My particular job is fairly recession proof and if Obama gets in, will ensure, through his stupidity, that I'll always have one.

Spreading the wealth means taking my hard earned cash and giving it to soem worthless douchbag...I give enough to charity, sorry bud..whats mine is mine.

Welfare is Socialism, but so is giving hundereds of billions to bail out careless corporate idiots on Wall Street. The only difference between the two is who's getting the hand-out.

You fail to understand the real problem, it's not the mortgages alone, its the selling of them to other banks and nations.

China have like a trillion dollar in Fannie Mae bonds (or something like that I don't remember exactly), do you think they will just shut up if they will turn into dust?

Why do you think other banks over all the world fall? The real estate didn't explode like that everywhere, the banks bought those shitty bonds and other financial instruments and when the base (mortgages) collapsed they created a hole ten times bigger than what they were really worth.

China has been buying our debt for years, dude. They won't call the debt until just before invading Taiwan so don't worry. If memory serves, some of our debt was refinanced through them during the Clinton administration to make the economy look more robust.

Next time you go to a dollar store or use an HSBC credit card remember they own our butts.

But if any of that $700B ever trickles down to you please let us know. :)

I wish I would be hit by just one tenth of a percent of that sum...its enough for me!

Anyway....not bailing out all of these institutions would hurt MILLIONS of people world wide and could have caused a very tense political arena with the likes of China knocking on America's door wanting their money. I seriously think if TRILLIONS of China money would have been wiped out this might have turned into a war.

I really hope some STRICT laws will be legislated after this BS, and a stop to all those public companies that pay MILLIONS to execs on the back of the common stock holder.

Like those fuckers at AIG going for expensive holidays after they got bailed out ....I hope those guys will do some time for that....seriously!

Hopefully with the government being a partner now they will stop that nonsense.

Although it somewhat un-capitalistic I think that there should be some new rules that regulate the bonuses and salaries of public companies, the majority of stocks are spread too thin amongst individual stock holders and they get tramped by the big funds and investors that have a few directors seats.

Some new rules would really help and make most companies operate more efficiently, a CEO of a losing company shouldn't make millions per year no matter what on the back on investors back. That's a pure abuse of lacking laws (similar to what caused this crisis, abuse of laws and lacking & slacking regulation).

Spread the Wealth Republican Style = borrower 5 trillion dollars in the name of the US tax payer and pass it along to your friends in the defence and and fossil fuel industries.

Another way they've taken OUR WEALTH is by deregulating the financial markets (and the Dems share some blame here) and when the inevitable Ponzi scheme crashes you and me are stuck with the bill.

Simple version:

Repugs borrow in your name and don't spend a penny of that money to invest in the country or the people to in who's name they've borrowed the money.

That's redistribution of wealth any way you slice it.

And John McCain's campaign manager received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Fannie and Freddie?  What's your fucking point?  America is fucking done!  Finished!  Game Over!  And you know why?  Because we are divided moreso than ever before.  The establishment has created exactly what they intended.....a two party system run by leaders on both sides who are cut from the cloth.  While we are sitting around bitch and calling each other liberals and neocons the Warren Buffets and George Soros of the world are going out and drinking together and celebrating.  People like HH6 need to wake the fuck up!
