Shoot has it exactly right. The problem today in many segments of the minority community and the problem that has always existed for the poor white trash segment of society, is that their attitude causes most of their hardship. Look at the immigrants that came to this country from Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, etc. during the earlier parts of this century-- The usual bloodline passage of profession starts at the bottom and works its way up. An immigrant would likely be some sort of laborer or factory worker or small business owner in an ethnic community. Others would join the armed forces. Their children would go to school and move up the ladder entering a profession of higher pay and better benefits. First generation Americans would then join the civil service, become teachers, get government jobs or get into vocational occupations. Others might carry on the tradition of their parents and continue operating the family business, possibly expanding operations further. The third generation children would likely have even more opportunities, especially education wise and move up further-- Many now can afford private schools, living in the suburbs etc. Now we see a real middle class that produces bonafide professionals- Doctors, Lawyers, Politicians, Accountants, Entrepreneurs, etc. And of course, because this is America, regardless if you are first, second or third generation, you can always get lucky, be industrious and achieve the American dream without going through this progression.
Every generation strived to make a better life for their children and attempted to give their kids the opportunities they did not have. No whining about what they are "entitled" to, no bitching about "discrimination", no belly-aching about bullshit. Today, many only think of themselves and only in the short term. There’s no thought about the next generation or their needs. Many in the black community especially don't even raise their own children (More than half born out of wedlock) and as a result the younger generation isn't steered in any positive direction. Government programs replace work ethic, the blame game replaces responsibility and the answer is always more taxes for the rest of us.
