Good Samaritan buys woman's house for her at auction in Texas
Wed Oct 29, 3:06 PM
The Associated Press

DALLAS - A Texas woman distraught over losing her house showed up to watch it auctioned off, but that wasn't the end of the story.

Tracy Orr will return home after a stranger bought the house back for her Saturday.

Marilyn Mock said she decided on the spot to buy the house after striking up a conversation with a sobbing Orr at the auction.

Mock was there to help her 27-year-old son bid on a house.

Mock successfully bid $30,000 for Orr's house in Pottsboro.

Orr will make payments to her once the deal is finalized.

"She needed help. That was it," Mock said. "I just happened to be there and anybody else would have done the same thing."

Orr had bought the house for $80,000 in 2004 but fell behind on her payments.

"It means so much to all of us," Orr said. "It's not just a house."

I like warm & fuzzy stories like that.  :)

Actually I am being cold and wondering if I should buy a house there why the market is so bad. You know swoop in and buy one of these cheapos, but of course I won't be giving it back. I had a house in the US some years back, sold it, and wonder if it's time to replace it.

You'd be surprised at what you can find on the market these days.
You can find house with a market value in the hundred of thousands going for less than 1K.
A $30K house was probably auctioned off for th emortgage, ...but those auctioned off for tax liens are even more of a bargain. Those can be picked up for less than a penny on the dollar.

I've bought property in the US before, and also know plenty of folks who have a summer home in the USA. Plus on paper I have most right to what US citizens have anyway so for me personally it's a non-issue.

I found years back as long as you have money, they'll sell to you. I would assume with the housing market as it is now, that would still hold true.
