Good story.  He was a good player.

In other election news, the Sun also rises

Easily overshadowed amid the coverage of last night's historic presidential election was the mayoral race in Sacramento, where three-time NBA All-Star point guard Kevin Johnson defeated two-term incumbent Heather Fargo by 15 percentage points.

"A little knucklehead kid, a poor kid from Oak Park going away and coming back and being the mayor of the city he grew up in -- that's the American dream," Johnson told the Sacramento Bee. "I hope it's a great example for every young person in our community that if you work hard, you get a great education and have good character, anything is possible."

Johnson, who helped spirit the second Dream Team to a FIBA world championship in 1994, also helmed the Suns to an NBA Finals appearance in 1993. He turned in one of the gutsiest performances in postseason history in Game 3, logging a Finals-record 63 minutes and chipping in 25 points during a triple-overtime victory over Michael Jordan's Bulls.

The native Sacramentan faces a considerable challenge with his new gig: The Bee reports the state capital faces "imminent financial cutbacks and budget gaps projected to total $140 million over the next four years."

Johnson isn't the first athlete to embrace his inner Tommy Carcetti with a foray into politics after retirement.
