Richmond Hill Man Accused Of Trying To Smuggle
$2 Million Into U.S. Tuesday November 11, 2008
CityNews.ca StaffA Richmond Hill man is in deep trouble and it may be awhile before he comes home to tell his troubles to his friends.
The truck driver was stopped at the Ambassador Bridge going into Detroit on Friday, telling guards he was heading for the West Coast with a load of food. He told them he had nothing to declare and was only carrying about $700 on him.
But something he said triggered their suspicious and that, in turn, triggered a search.
They wound up X-raying his Volvo rig and then brought in sniffer dogs. And what those noses allegedly found left the local man in hot water on a very cold day.
Officials claim Eskender Mafarani was trying to smuggle in $2 million in 138 separate cash bundles hidden inside the walls of the truck. Under U.S. law, it's illegal to conceal more than 10-grand when entering or leaving the country.
They also claim to have discovered six cell phones and a laptop in the same area as the money, although what they were doing there, where the dough came from and what it was allegedly going to be used for isn't clear.
It may be a while before we get that answer. The 52-year-old agreed to remain in custody until a court hearing on November 18th.

{lol} I'll bet he agreed to remain in custody. I'd bet dollars to donughts that was mob money he was transporting,
...and there's probably some very angry people wanting to have a chat with him right now.
