Starbucks profit drops 97% on store closing costs

SEATTLE (AP) — Starbucks (SBUX) says its profit dropped 97% in its fourth quarter mainly because of the costs of closing underperforming stores and also falling sales in the U.S.
Seattle-based Starbucks says profit fell to $5.4 million, or a penny a share, from $158.5 million, or 21 cents a share, a year earlier.

The coffee retailer says it earned 10 cents a share when the costs from closing stores in the U.S. and Australia are excluded.

Thomson Reuters says analysts expected profit of 13 cents a share and revenue of $2.58 billion.

Revenue rose 3% to $2.52 billion from $2.44 billion. Same-store sales dropped 8% in the U.S.

Exactly!  I read some time ago in a coffee blog that the burnt taste is there in an effort to disguise the overall poor quality of their beans.

Coffee is supposed to be a sweet drink anyways, not mouth-puckering bitter.

 I bought a coffee there twice because I thought they just burnt the coffe the first time. No. Thats how shitty it tastes ALL the time but the lemmings like to sit outside the store and drink this slop because of what...I don't know.

I haven't seen the sales figures for Hawaii, but I think they have saturated the market.  Too many stores.  In some places there are about five stores in a six block radius.

I do not "get" Starbucks. Being from here, we have no coffee shops per se, too hot. First time an American friend took me to Starbucks I was like why are we sitting around drinking overpriced coffee for hours - are no bars open?
