Sergio Oliva Story
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:31:50 AM »
Guys,
Here in NJ, there once existed The Capitol Theater in Passaic.  This venue hosted the biggest bands in the world (The Stones, The Who, Springsteen, etc.) and had very many special events with appearances by a variety of famous performers.
Back in 1976, The Capitol hosted a bb exhibition with pros getting onstage and posing.  It was not a competition but more of a show/exhibition.  The crowd was filled with anticipation as a "surprise" guest was rumored for weeks.  No, it wasn't Arnold but it was in fact, Dave Draper.
After the show was over, two of my friends waited backstage and out came Sergio who had also appeared on stage.  They walked with him down the block and he was very friendly.  During the conversation, Sergio looked up at a big billboard advertising the movie "King Kong."  This is why I believe it was 1976 as the Jeff Bridges version came out that year.  As Sergio looked over the billboard, he looked down at my friends and simply said, "King Kong?  I am King Kong!"
I promise to very soon bring over my computer guy to show me how to post pictures and I will be sure to include a picture of my 2 friends standing next to Sergio outside the Capitol Theater circa 1976.

He's actually Cuban.  Im sure you can trace his ancestry back to Africa just like you can with lots of "Cubans".  we all have a little negro in us remember?

Sergio like myself is a black hispanic, guys please don't be so closed minded. All nationalities come in all shapes and colors. That is like saying all white people are one nationality. Black or white is just your complexion, not your heritage. Great story Harley, can't wait to see the pics.

Epic loser trying to play the race card.  No one was being racist.  We were speculating on his ancestry.

Actually, I am now 41 years old so I was about 9 years old.  I did not attend the show but have 3 friends who did.  I am working on getting their photos to post.
