Fedor Emelianenko loses at 2008 World Combat Sambo Championships
« on: November 17, 2008, 04:37:07 AM »
Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the worlds top mixed martial arts fighter and king of Combat Sambo, lost to Bulgaria’s Blagoi Ivanov this past weekend by a score of 8-5 in the semifinals of the 2008 World Combat Sambo Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Emelianenko and Ivanov first met back in February of 2008 at Russia’s Presidents Cup where Emelianenko outpointed the Bulgarian for his ninth straight victory in Combat Sambo competition.

Ivanov apparently used the experience to formulate a winning gameplan for their second encounter. Emelianenko was dominated from the outset and was in danger of losing 8-1 until the Russian scored a knockdown in the final minute of competition to add four points to his total.

In the end the deficit was too great to overcome and the former PRIDE heavyweight champion had to settle for a bronze medal, his first since the year 2000.

Emelianenko made no excuses for the loss, admitting that Ivanov beat him “Fair and square”, but this author wonders if Fedor’s time spent in Thailand filming “The Fifth Execution” with Michael Madsen and Rutger Hauer left him unprepared for the surging Bulgarian.

Fedor was still in Thailand as recently as two weeks ago and has also been making the rounds as Affliction’s media darling, promoting the upcoming reality series “Fighting Fedor” and his pending battle with Andrei Arlovski at ‘Day of Reckoning’ on January 24 in Anaheim, California.

Ivanov went on to win the gold medal after easily dispatching Germany’s Stefan Janos in the 100+ kg weight class.

Yeah, who cares about the Mambo Championships? Fedor's a fighter, not a dancer.

the dude hasn't lost an MMA fight in eight years. it amazes me that a loss at a sambo tournament has people jumping around saying "he's done" or "see he's overrated". ::)

even if he loses a few times he's still the best heavyweight in MMA history. during the 2000's there wasn't one fighter nearly as dominant for nearly as long. and until he loses a big-time fight, i'm unconvinced.

i think signing fedor would be an idiotic move for Dana right now. if he did, the rising star of brock lesnar would be instantly snuffed out.

not just because brock in no way can beat fedor right now, but because fedor's hype is just monumental. if he showed up with a UFC contract no one would really care about brock for a while and few would talk about him being the next big thing.

now, if Dana is smart, he'd let brock grow for a while, if he wins the belt maybe let him defend it once or twice, THEN a huge "fedor v brock" showdown would be a gigundo PPV event.

i trained sambo and now train mma, sambo is harder if anything because they can always grip you, because of the obscenely thick jacket and all fighters have great sub skills not just striking.
This loss is massive.
Fedor will either train like hell to come back or slowly go downhill.
He has way to big a work ethic to simply drop huge standards like mirko but well see how he learns off this.
He used to win these tornaments......easily

Most mainstream people have no clue who Fedor is.  They should sign him in the UFC and have him start at the bottom.  Over a 2-3 yr period, who would walk through everyone in the division and ultimately meet up with Brock, who by then will be a mega MMA star and have much better skills.  Fedor would still beat his ass, and cement his place as the greatest ever...

well the thing with crocop he never fought in a cage so i guess it messed him up but fedor on the other hand has fought in a cage and i dont think it would have made a difference. i just think hes the man and the only one that should meet him in the ring is the spider

considering fedor is a heavy with zero losses since 2000 and silva is a middle with three... i'd wager about a minute and a half before the spider gets all his limbs broken.

just watched the fight nothing to worry about there, if this was how you wont in mma fedor would have lost loads of times, he simply got out pointed after getting turned on two takedown attempts, throw points.  affliction have wasted their money signing Blagoi Ivanov.  without the jacket it wouldnt happen nor is it important

I guess it would be nice to see Fedor in UFC because no one can't denail that right now it's the most solid organisation there is.  And if Fedor signs there HW division would be top notch.
However It would be kind of disrespectfull to start him at the bottom.  How many fights Lesnar had before given a shot at the title? Like three.
Anyway I don't believe that right now Brock will be able to defeat Nog.
It will be Pride all over again. (maybe for real if they manage to save crocops nut and allow him to juice)

Fedor's Combat Sambo match

Here is another a better quality of Fedor Emelianenko's loss in Combat Sambo. The fighter, Blagoi Ivanov, was signed by Affliction MMA moments after match although the two had been in talks for weeks prior to the tournament. Ivanov holds a record of 14-0-1 in amateur MMA.

Of the loss, Fedor said this:

"Yes, it was my first defeat in Combat Sambo, nothing shocking though. Its a sport, it could have happened in any moment. I'm happy that I haven't lost by KO or any other unpleasent way. I'v lost by the throw. In MMA you can be on your back as long as you want. In CS is a different rules. Nevertheless I started with Sambo and I love this sport and I will continue to compete in it. From every fight I learn something. In this case I learned that you can't have it all, if you do everyhting at ones. At the monent the most important thing for me is MMA. Its important for me to stay the champion. In MMA I won't let myself to relax at all. As for Sambo - its like a hobby (proper translation) to me, so I can relax a little bit. I can't train as hard for Sambo, because I have other things to do".
